Hello, my guineapig has been on antibiotics for 14 days and still no sign of improvement, painful when urinating. I have booked in with the vets for another xray, I have seen stories on here of guineapigs having operations and anesthetic and getting through it but people are saying of the vet has done it before. I really don't want to take her for that reason. I was wondering if people go to normal vets or go to exotic vets. As there is an exotic vets an hour away and I wondered what would be the best choice.

Hi if there's a vet experienced with guinea pigs that would be much better, doesn't have to be an exotics vet can be a general vet with lots of piggie experience, are there any on the reconmended forum list near you?
I hope your piggie recovers soon 💖

Hi and welcome

We have got members from all over the world and from very different conditions and backgrounds. it would help us (and you) enormously if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to location in your account details (accessed by clicking on your username on the top bar) so we can always tailor any advice and recommendations straight away to what is relevant and available where you are, including tips from other members in your area (so there are any).

We do have a vet locator on the top bar with a list of recommended UK vets and also a link to recommended vets in some other countries. Here is the link again: Recommended Guinea Pig Vets

The question is not as straight forward as you might think because there are some excellent general vets, especially those that work with guinea pig rescues and that have the necessary practice, while exotic vet fees can surpass the financial capacities of some members. It really depends on where you are and what you can reach. I travel an hour for any piggy operations that are not life and death emergencies; the vet I am using is a general vet specialising in guinea pigs.

Welcome to the forum.
Sorry you have a sick piggy.
I go to a general vets but they have piggy experience to I am confident with them.
Hope your piggy recovers soon - we are here to support you

its impossible to say whether a normal vets or exotics vets would be best. Some normal vets have taken the time to build up their piggy knowledge and as a result become very experienced in treating them. In theory exotics vets should be very knowledgeable but not all of them deal with guinea pigs regularly so they can be the more expensive and less helpful option. That's why we ask members to recommend great vets that they find so we can maintain some sort of list to help members find the best solution and I see Wiebke has linked you to it above.
