Apologies, if I have posted this in the wrong section but I didn't know which one to post it in.

I hope I have done the right thing but we visited a petshop/breeder/garden centre today and was so concerned I rang the RSPCA who basically told me to ring my local Council who are going round as a matter of urgency.

There were far too many male guineapigs in a small hutch and two had wounds on their backs. Guineapigs had chewed off ears.

My main concern was a lop rabbit £70.00 with hutch (ferplast 120) which was far too small to house it. We thought the rabbit was stuffed it was so still. It let you go right up to it, normally rabbits are very nosey things, this was not. It's head was down and it's eye I could see was sore. Me and my Daughter were so upset.

I was very weary of saying anything to them as obviously they are not going to care when they have meerkats on their website for sale.

I don't understand how they can get away with it. I hope I did the right thing as part of me feels a bit of a busy body but I did it for the animals and my name and address will not be disclosed. What does anyone think?

Silly .

Totally right to ring the alarm! Poor animals!

Um, I'm sorry, MEERKATS for sale? o.0 What the fudge? Can you actually sell meerkats in the UK? To just anybody?

Definitely right to report it. Had you said something to them, they might have shaped up for a short time -- you return a week later, think great, it's a lot better -- and revert right back once the hulabaloo has passed. Let them get caught out properly.

Absolutely, the council issue the licenses and there are stipulations regarding their duty of care to the animals such as living quarters, food and health and if they are in breach of those they are breaching their license terms.

Well done you. There's just too much of this sort of thing going on. With the amount of poor unwanted animals in the rescues just now, shops shouldn't be allowed to sell them, especially if they can't even be bothered to care for them properly. I've recently done the same thing with a local pet shop and the council are investigating. Like everyone on here, it's hard to walk away and do nothing when you see this sort of thing. Let us know what happens.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I can't stop thinking of them especially the rabbit. The page for add to cart on the internet selling pygmy hedgehogs, wallaby babies and meerkat is not available now, I didn't know you could even buy them or who they are aimed at to buy, so hopefully they don't sell them now.

The Council will probably be befriended and fobbed off..

You are right things change for a while if something is said, then things will just go back to as they were. I don't see the point of selling these poor things as they don't seem to even care where they end up or if they are going to be cared for.

Anyway, i'll step of my soap box.

I will follow the Council up in about 10 days although I don't think they have to tell me anything other than they have been and then let you know.

Silly x.

How awful to have these poor animals in such terrible conditions. Well done for reporting it. You have done the right thing.

Hi,

I said I would let everyone who replied what happened. I rang the Council today in the Licensing Department, they apparantly visited the next day and are 'happy with their findings at them having a licence' I am baffled. I asked was the rabbit in the cage at the front door and he said yes..

He said he checked everything and was happy for a licence to be given to them. I said I find a horrid atmosphere to the place and always trust my gut instinct as it is never wrong. It is akin to a meat factory for pets. They don't get the babies out for petting to get used to humans for them to be pets which I think alone is wrong.

They breed not just guineapigs but rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, chickens, geese, tons of budgies (far too many in one cage), ferrits, the list goes on.

I have never seen guineas with bitten ears before. The Council seem to look at the place overall rather than individual animals because they have food and water I suppose.

I don't think alot of animal lovers on here would like going there and at first glance it looks ok but when you know how you look after your own you can see how stressful the place is, the noise of all the budgies is terrible and there are so many they are pooing on the heads of the ones below.

It isn't a garden centre now just breeding ground for animals.

Oh well, once in 47 years is enough for me going there, there is nothing really I can do, I did it already.

Sillyx.
