Yesterday Gwinny my big fat guinea went to the vets with suspected ovarian cysts and stone(s)
I'm happy to say that she doesn't have cysts - she's just very overweight![ they said she is obese]
She had a stone removed form her urethra and this has been sent to the lab to be analysed - in the meantime can anyone suggest a safe diet until the vets get back to me, they couldn't commit until the lab results are back.
thanks x

diet

I've checked out Laura's sticky re veg.
The guineas have a lot of veg, unlimited hay and pellets with a mix of muesli in, they've all come from different places and their previous carers have all fed some sort of muesli [Tallulah and Gloria were on rabbit food] so i got used to mixing what they were used to in with the pellets and have carried on doing so to a ratio of about 1 part muesli to 3 parts nuggets - they have all been moved onto Harringtons [ Wagg] now.
I guess i have to limit the dried food?
Can anyone here recommend any pellets that are particularly good or am i ok sticking with Harringtons?
Also how much should each pig be having per day pellet wise?

Good that you are having the stone analysed. The vast majority of stones consist of calcium carbohydrate, so you want to keep calcium levels down.

Timothy hay is lowest in calcium. Also consider the calcium content in pellets and water. Here is a veg/fruit chart that also gives calcium values.

Barley water and plenty of fluid can help.

Thanks Weibke x

I think i am in a hard water area, i hadn't really considered this.
Do you know if there's any pellets that are more suitable than what i'm feeding or are they all more or less the same?
I'm sure my vet will advise soon but i'm worrying about how i can get Gwinny's weight down?
Obviously i will try more floor time but not many of my females seem too keen on being out of their "safe zone" c&c's :(
