Hi,
i noticed today wheni was cleaning out lola and bellas cage that bella had lots of gunk around her left eye i wiped it away but i was wondering is it is a singe of something more serious? thanks xashx

try guinealynx.com
any discharge from the eye isn't a good sign, i'd recommend a vet who can prescribe suitable eyedrops or antibiotics.

It could just be the cleaning fluid that guineas produce. Was it milky?

well at first i thought it was just the white of her eye but wheni cheked it was white gunk, checked her there and there isnt any more so i will cheack again in the morning and if there is more there i will get my boyfriend to take her to a vet x

yeah lol it was the first thing i thought of but i think i might get her to a vet just incase a little cheak up wont hurt them both xx

Course not its for the best to check. :) Yeah Flora used to get it a lot being jet black around the eyes it was more noticable. x

Yeah i was really concerd because i strugled to get her out the cage to day and now have a nice big scrath on my nose ian i was worries maybe her eye got proded by my nose or finger by accident :-( took her out to cheack her eye again and gave her big cuddles and kisses after a few nose nudges she calmed down and was kissing back soo i think and bick in the good books . hope shes ok x

sorry hadnt heard of that, can you tell me about that?
thought one of my girls had an eye infection bathed it with salt water took her to the vets he looked at her and said her eyes were fine!
it wasnt sticky or anyhing just thick milky looking stuff that dissapeared as quickly as it appeared!

The grooming fluid is a white fluid substance - which looks like milk. Guinea pigs produce this fluid when they groom themselves, a few drops can sometimes come out of their nose as well as their eyes, and the fluid drains away once the pig is finished grooming. It can take a fair few minutes to drain in some pigs, but it's usually gone within a minute in the majority. If it takes more than a few minutes to drain, or spills straight out of the eyes onto the hair around them (instead of draining away) it could indicate a blocked tear duct, although for some fluid to spill is pretty normal.

Some small "crusties" around the eyes are also normal, often just dried grooming fluid that has spilled over and accumulated. It would be more of a concern if the crusties around the eyes were very heavy and frequent, or coloured, or if there was active eye discharge (e.g. the eyes constantly running).

that must have been what i saw on biscuit as she was in the run with bessie and thinking about it she was cleaning herself
thank you for that,i didnt realise! :red x
