Hi everyone , I've had my little guinea pig for just over a week - today while he was eating his cabbage , he was making this little noises , like a squeak but not if that makes sence, my husband messaged me while I was in work and I made him FaceTime me so I could hear

Could this be due to me cutting back on his veg and instead of having it all the time , I let him go an evening without as he just seemed to be leaving it , but now he has it in the morning only he seems to be tucking in and enjoying it more.

When guinea pigs eat, their small airways can be blocked and so you may hear noises when they eat or clean themselves. @Wiebke knows how to put it in better words haha

Are they breathing related or wheeking noises?

When breathing related, any slight obstruction to the airways is always more audible during eating. A minor temporary obstruction, like a bit of hay dust etc. usually passes within a few hours.

You should see a vet if a) as a non-urgent visit the minor obstruction is persistent over the course of several days or even weeks, but does not get worse. B) Promptly if the crackling, wheezing, rasping becomes audible at all times (i.e. same or next day). C) Very promptly as an emergency if you guineapig is losing its appetite/thirst and is becoming lethargic.

If it is communication, it is likely noises that express an "At last!" kind of reproach about finally getting fresh veg again. My piggies make a special, slightly grunting noise when I am running late with serving veg, a kind of "At last!" expression of reproach.

If it sounds like a respiratory sound or a wheeze, it's worth getting checked by a vet, as guinea pig respiratory problems can get serious very quickly. However, if it's more of a chortle or a musical kind of squeaking, it's probably just what my kids call 'busy guinea pig noise.' A lot of guinea pigs chortle and whistle as they go about their business. They are noisier animals than many people think!
