hi all we have had snowflake 2 days from pets at home. I've noticed today that she is closing her 1 eye and it's quite gunky. Any advice? I'll attach a pic of what she was like having her fri, and one of today, but it's not the best xx

:D Difficult to tell from the picture. Best thing to do is get her to a vet. Pets@Home should cover the cost.

Hi and welcome!

Could you please take a picture sideways for a better assessment. In any case, you will have to see a vet promptly, if you have got access to a cheap local out-of-hours service, ideally today, otherwise tomorrow. If infection/exposure has happened in the shop and has developed within the first 2-3 weeks after the sale, then you can reclaim vet cost from the shop by presenting the vet bill together with the sale receipt at the shop.
Guinea Pig Vet Locator

- Are you noticing an area of whiteish flakes on top of the eye? In that case, you are dealing with highly transmittable ringworm, which is sadly not at all rare in pet shop piggies. This has to run its due course, but the sooner you can treat it after a vet diagnosis with appropriate medication (NOT any cheap shop products or creams), the more you can prevent it from spreading and - with a medcated bath - you can also prevent it from coming out in other areas and affecting the companion, which can already be infected, too.
Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

- It the gunk is yellow or greenish, then you are dealing with URI (a bacterial respiratory infection), which can kill if left untreated.

- If the "gunk" is whiteish transparent (caused by clear, watery fluid due to an irritation) or whiteish/slightly blueish and building up on the surace of the eye, then this indicates an eye irritation, injury or in the second case, an ulceration caused by an injury.

- Guinea pigs have got milky eye cleaning fluid (as they don't clean their eyes by blinking), which can sometimes collect in the corner of the eye or underneath the eye. This is harmless.

She's beautiful.

I can't really tell from the photo either, it could just be eye gunk or the white cleaning fluid that come from their eyes but I would get her checked just in case it is the early stages of a respiratory infection. Does she have a friend? if so, are they ok?

Thanks, I rang p@h and I popped her in (only 2 mins away) and their "most experienced" lady had a look. She seemed to think it was just a runny eye?!?! So I came home with beaphar eye gel to try today and if not to ring the vet and they will pay the bill. I've put some cream on it so that's what the majority of the wet on and around her eye is, the cream was a bit thick. but here is a better pic x

Would a uri affect both eyes? This is just the one eye and apart from looking like her eye is closed her other eye is perfect and she is eating and pooping normally

In theory yes, it is a good sign she is eating and pooing ok. I noticed you had another thread and wiebke had answered. It could possibly have been something in her eye that made it water as Wiebke mentioned.

Thankyou- yes for some reason it posted twice with the photos on separate threads!

She is currently munching on her fresh meadow hay in her cage and star is munching in her separate cage- they've both cwtched (cuddled-sorry my Welsh!) down to sleep in their hay xx

That's ok, someone I know says that a lot and is at uni in Wales so now I know why :) Are they separated because of her eye?

I have merged your two threads, so you can see my previous answer above now.

Your later picture shows a runny eye; I would recommend to have your guinea pig checked for a strong irritation or potential non-ulcerating eye injury.
Please note that eye infections can develop very quickly, so please try to have them seen within 24 hours.

Thanks all- no not separated because of her eye, but because of quarantine I've only had her 2 days:( bless her. She's fine in herself and it was a bit puffy earlier but seems to have gone down a bit since this morning now I've used the cream. If it's no better tomorrow I will book an appointment at the vets, it's typical that we have been off 2 weeks and tomorrow we are both back to work:( hubby and I are both teachers. I have a staff meeting after school as well tomorrow, if it's still looking sore will she be ok until Tuesday? There really isn't any other option, I don't have anyone tomorrow to take her:(:( x

You mean the eye was bulging? What kind of cream have you used?

No it wasn't bulging. It looked a bit puffy above the actual eye. I used the cream they rcommended in pets at home beaphar eye gel as they thought it could be an irritation to something. I do understand that this is not a professional opinion however.
