My poor piggy Gunther is probably suffering a UTI (hopefully nothing worst i pray!) i took her into the vets on Tuesday, i didnt have money for an x-ray as the vet mentioned sometimes it could be stones, but i didnt have the money so i decided to get her the septrin antibiotic to treat a UTI, which i thought/think it was/is. Shes had about 3 doses so far...and she is always wet under her tummy and so smelly...and i cant stand to hear her wheeking while she tries to pee, and the pink/red fluid comes out....i hope it isnt stones, a UTI i have dealt with before in Tabitha, except with Tabitha also has ovarian cysts during her 2 UTI's and she was bleeding faaaarrrr heavier (like a woman menstruating) and she also smelled funny and was losing hair...but didnt really cry out or wheek in pain...and she ended up getting better, but Tabitha was always tough and fought, never even cried while getting shots, but Gunther i know as the underdog and smaller in size cries when they try to clip her toe nails, let alone with an illness...so shes been wheeking all day long, eating little drinking little, but still drinking and eating....i hate to hear her suffer :(

i am really sorry about Gunther, i hope it is a uti, but if not and it looks like it is stones what will you do if you cant afford an xray? Could you get any help from your family or anything, because you cant leave her in pain forever it will be unbearable?

I have been through bladder stones with a piggy, it is heartbreaking.

Fingers crossed for Gunther x

thank you... if it is stones i cant leave her like that, i can get help from my family...sigh* its just really hard times right now...i really hope its just a UTI though I'm sceptical of that...but yes lets keep our fingers crossed...she still isnt feeling so well...next dose is in 2 hours..and i will start giving all my piggies cranberry juice starting later today...I'm so worried about her..

Barley water is good to, It's known as Pearl Barley in the UK. You boil it for 30 - 45 minutes, drain off the liquid and syringe the liquid to the Guinea Pig.

I know you probably won't have a Holland and Barratt. I use Concerntrated Cranberry this is the link perhaps you can get something similiar.

The most important thing is she is still urinating if she does have a stone it can block the urinary tract, as you can imagine this is extremely painful and requires urgent medical assistance day or night it is an emergency if she cannot pass urine and will be fatal if left untreated.

Stones are more dangerous in Boars, as it is very difficult for them to pass a stone though the penis, fortunately for Sows the urethra is larger although not all Sows can pass stones, but it is less likely to cause a blockage, thats not to say it can't. Depending on were the stone is sometimes Vets are able to Manipulate the stone out a sow without an operation.

yes my boy had the op, he was so poorly and for quite a while, and sadly i lost him in the end, i really can not stress how important it is to find out as soon as you can if you can, i know times are hard, but piggy has to come first.

Good luck.

I got my fingers and everything crossed here xxxxx

ask for an ultra sound as this is cheaper than an xray. My piggie showed bladder stones on friday after 4 weeks of numerous visits to the vet.

We are trying a new course of antibiotics and metacalm pain relief and she seems to be getting slightly better.

i got her the xray after searching all over the city for a vet willing to do a payment plan with me, she got pain meds she had a stone, had a surgery scheduled for tuesday but passed away yesterday morning..... ugh i hate this country..

I'm so very sad to hear this.

Unfortunately it is not that different in the UK for piggies....a lot of non-cavy savvy vets and then high prices for diagnostics and subsequent ops...

It's good you got a payment plan for her and really shows your commitment.

You did what you could for her and clearly loved her very much.

I'm so sorry for your loss......popcorn free at The Bridge little Gunther.

x

thanks, i did try hard, and i did love her very much, i wont even beat myself up that i should have tried harder...idk...but i did...and doors kept slamming in my face until i found one vet willing to help me out, me and the piggies will be going there from now on....screw the rest of them....they just want their money..it's all business..thats why i couldnt ever be a vet myself because i couldnt simply turn a sick animal away, guinea pig, dog, cat it doesnt matter, if they need your help they need your help, its disgusting how a price is put on someones life, and well they do the same thing here to people..RIP Gunther. <3

thanks everyone, i really appreciate it. I will continue to see this vet with my other 3. Tabby is due for appt next saturday, even though she is relatively healthy, shes turning 4 soon (Gunther's twin sister) and has ovarian cysts for the past 2 years, i say check up is in order!

Oh nooooo i was so hoping that little Gunther was going to be ok, you did all you could love 8...8...8...
RIP Gunther run free at the bridge, popcorn thru the meadows and munch out on lush green grass and clover, you'll be so sadly missed by your mummy and your family but NEVER forgotten xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
(((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))) and lots of loves from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Another little star now twinkling in the sky .......... :(

so sorry to hear about gunther. Popcorn free little girl. Perhaps your new vets maybe open to learning about guineas from some of the good vets over here? Worth a try. Get some info together about ovarian cysts before you go. Good luck and thinking of you x x x
