Teenage Guinea Pig
So, it's been over a month now that Gus & I have been together and while it was obviously love at first sight, it was touch and go initially with his illness & day 3 emergency vet visit- but we've made it!
In the past month, while I've always been a guinea pig mom throughout the years, I chose to revisit all the past piggie knowledge to reeducate myself for both my own benefit, as well as Gus's.
What I've learned is that while piggies generally sleep with their eyes open, they can & will, sleep with their eyes closed, but it's a rare occurrence as it only happens if they feel EXTREMELY SECURE & SAFE!
We all know guinea pigs are natural born prey and the sleeping with their eyes open is a defense mechanism to always be on their toes & ensure their survival.
After reading that they will ONLY sleep with their eyes shut if they truly feel safe & secure, I paused a moment, glanced into my little guy's pineapple & my heart smiled.
Gus sleeps with his eyes shut tight, and has always done so since our first few days together. And while I've tried & failed to capture said moment of restful bliss in a photo, (I always wake him with the damn flash), it does my heart good to know that my love and affection clearly give him that type of peace that can only come from unconditional love. This Christmas, may we all sleep with eyes shut tight, knowing we are safe & loved!
