Hi there,

I just wanted to ask if anyone has had any gut issues with their pigs and what you had to do for it? A few weeks back my guinea pig had bladder stone removal surgery, that all went perfectly, she managed to eat well afterwards and was her usual happy squeaky self. Unfortunately for the past few days she hadnt been her usual self, she hadnt been eating much and she was very lethargic and turned her nose up at her hay (which is not her at all). I kept an eye on her to see if she would perk up but this morning she was very very lethargic and turned up her nose at almost everything, couldnt pass poo and wouldnt drink. Rushed her up to the vets this morning and went through the usual procedures (weight, teeth, the usual body checks) he listened to her gut and noticed there was nothing moving in there and no noise was being made, which apparently is unusual for a pig because their stomachs have to keep constantly churning and moving food. The vet gave her an injection to ease her stomach and to try and get it back to normal, she has also been given recovery food which I have to syringe into her every hour to make sure theres food in her and has to take medicine twice a day to ease with the pooing etc. Its so frustrating because everything turned out so well a few days ago after her op and now this :( you just can't win sometimes :mal:

Hey,

Sorry to hear your little one is poorly. What is the name of the medicine you have got for home? Is it Emeprid (Metachlopromide) by any chance? I would imagine the injection was this also. It is a gut stimulant and designed to help keep the guts moving and food going through.

Has there being any poo at all since the vets?

If the vet is certain there is no blockage I would also look at massage therapy using either a vibrating massage pad or an electric toothbrush that vibrates. Fluids are also important so for each feed that you do give at least 5ml of water.

However, until a blockage has been ruled out it is not wise to aggressively syringe feed. I would ask the vet for an xray to make sure, tonight if possible.
