Gypsey has bloody eye (internal bleed) - Pictures

Gypsey has got cataracts (sp) and today I have come home to discover she has an internal bleed behind the eye.

She was checked over when given her meds this morning, at aprox 7.30am - so it must have happened within that time frame (now 12.44pm here). She is perfectly fine in every other way, and is actually the best se has been since being diagnosed with heart problems. Teeth were checked only a month or so back properly and they are perfect.

Below are pictures, first of the bloody eye, the last pic is of her "normal" eye (pea eyed due to heart issues and cataracts also).

She doesnt seem to be in pain with it, although I know pigs are good at hiding things, but it seems like how when humans get blood shot eyes theres not any pain, if that makes sense?

I really hope its nothing serious because she really wouldnt cope with anesthetic with her heart issues or weight (840ish grams).

I have phoned the vet and he said it can be a result of high blood pressure (so you were right SarahP) but he would automatically rule that out because the fortekor she is on would drop her blood pressure, if anything, and that was his greatest concern with it - definitely not it being too high.

He said because she has perked up (I told him she has been running about more since upping her meds), and because she is 99% if not 100% blinde in that eye she probably wacked into something which has caused it.

He said if the skin around the eye swells, or it gets worse then he would like to see her, but otherwise its likely to be a bang or her cagemate has wacked into her (she does headbutt her sometimes, walk on top of her if she wont move etc so possible). He said it would reduce on its own within 7-10 days and of course if it hasnt, then go and see him.

He said hay would more likely cause an abcess, so a bang is the more likely 'injury'.

I am relieved, but I know not to be too relieved until its gone!
 
I agree with Claire, I'd check with the vet. Unfortunately it isn't something I've come across before.

ETA - We posted at the same time. Glad you checked with the vet, I hope her eye does clear up without issue.
 
What the vets describing is retinal bleeding. When the blood pressure gets to high the artery running to the retina (back bit of the eye) leaks blood out into the eye. This can eventually cause retinal detachment, causing irriversible blindness.

It seems to be a common cause of feline blindness.

Little random piece of info, sorry. But I'm glad its just a trauma and not this.

Thanks for explaining that. I hope its a trauma atleast, it doesnt seem to have changed over night which is good really as any change he said to go see him as it could be something else - so I'm on the look out !

She is blinde anyway in that eye, not to be mean to her but blindeness would be a relief over something like her losing the eye and having to have an op as she wouldnt get through an op right now I doubt.

Going back to the pea eye, my piggie Cheryls eyes are both like that, didnt know what it was but been reading a few posts about it on here. shes not bothered by it, she is a large piggie and the vet did say she was overweight last time i took her in. is it the same as fatty eye? does anyone have anymore info for me?
