After a bit of advice....

Poppy is a rescue so we don't know exactly how old she is but the vet says at least 6.

We took her to the vet around a month ago as she had a lump under her chin. The vet aspirated and said it's a haematoma. It really is huge though and is getting bigger.

I don't want to her to have it surgically removed as she is too old to go through is but wondering if we should ask for it to be drained?

However the veg did say with draining it would probably just fill up again.

We're not sure what to do.

She is still eating drinking and running around happy enough.

TIA

I think you should leave it alone like you said she is 6 so you don't really want her to be poked & prodded. Even if it looks unsightly, you still love her & her you. So leave be.

Although I'm no vet, if its growing its probably a bad sign. Maybe you could get it the cells tested to figure out what it is? If its likely to spread you want it off as soon as possible.

My Honey is 6 1/2 and has a huge haematoma on her bum - had it for nearly 2 years now - it was smaller to start with but seems to have reached "maximum growth " the vet has drained it twice and it just fills up again within a week - as it isn't interferring with her pooping and peeing we just leave it alone - so as long as your piggy is eating o.k. it should be fine.

I have made similar decisions to you with an older pig previously which was no surgery as I didn't think he would survive the anaesthetic. If the lump is causing difficulties for Poppy then it needs to be dealt with even if that means draining and allowing it to fill up again over time. If it is not causing any problems then you could leave it be until it does. If Poppy seems to be in discomfort, having difficulty eating etc then it could be worth asking for some pain relief to be prescribed to keep her comfortable.

Thanks guys.

The3LittlePigs the vet has aspirated, it's just blood.

She did say similar to you Tan in that if it were drained it would likely fill back up but I feel bad for leaving it!

It's honestly not effecting her at all so I think we'll continue to monitor. I was worried about her breathing as it's so close to her windpipe but the vet has said it's not attached to anything so no problems there.

It is always a toss up with older guinea pigs. Is your vet sure that it is a hematoma and not an abscess or something else? How piggy savvy is he? Could you get a second opinion?

Wiebke it's definitely a haematoma, I saw the blood coming out myself and she's had abscesses before so I can spot them. The lump isn't attached to anything so it's not a tumour either
