I got my rescue guinea pig 3 months ago, he’s eating and drinking but has been very subdued the last two days but I thought this was due to the heat, when I picked him up tonight I noticed his hair had balded and has scabs, he didn’t have this yesterday afternoon/ evening when I was handling him. Has anyone had his experience with a guinea pig ? Do I need to take a trip to the vet?

Oh poor little piggy! I think that is definitely worth a trip to the vets. It looks sore! i haven't experienced anything that looks like that before but I have experienced balding due to fungal infection and like u say, one minute there's hair then overnight it's gone. I hope all goes well and you can get it sorted out :)

I would take him to the vet. It could be mites, which is very irritating to guinea pigs and causes them to scratch and bite their skin. Update us, please. Hope your piggie feels better.

Trip to the vet is scheduled, I love all my guinea pigs and never experienced having and ill guinea pig before!

That looks very sore. Glad you have a vet visit booked. As others have said it could be either mange mites or fungal which both have different treatment. Is he scratching at all?

Ouch that looks very sore. Great that you have a vet trip scheduled. Please let us know how you get on.

Thank you for all your replies! Never experienced anything like this with any of my guinea pigs! Been too the vets and Morris has mites, so he has been treated and will be back to himself I’m not time at all😁

Has the vet given one dose of treatment or do you need to go back? Usually mite treatment is a course of at least 3 doses of Ivermectin or Selemectin in either injection or spot on treatment.

Hope he starts to feel brighter now.

A course of spot on for him and he’s seems a lot happier in himself so fingers crossed this will be the first and last time 🤞
