Hello everybody! I'm new here and only some hours ago I got my first guinea piggy (Sergio)..He's very sweet and nice but...While I was at the petshop, after I had chosen him,I noticed some kind of baldness in a part of his back. I asked the salesman about it and he said that Sergio had a fight with another male and he was bitten at that part of his body and the hairs are going to grow again in a few days. However, after I had taken Sergio home, with a better look I noticed the same problem around his left eye and also that his fur was not of the same thickness all over his body..Could it really have been some kind of an accident in a fight or do you think that something else is going on?
Thanks a lot in advance.. :) He's my first guinea pig ever and I'm really worried about him :...:(

Hi and Welcome

Would it be possible to post a picture of Sergio?
He may have a fungal infection which would need shampooing.

What breed is he and where did you get him from?

I know P@H give you a free vet check (If used within the 1st week) if you buy a piggie from them.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like Sergio may have mites. These are dormant in piggies and stress can cause them to come out, causing soreness and hairloss.

Dont worry, its treatable. You can eiher go to a vet who will give him treatment there or you can buy Ivermectin online and treat him yourself at half the cost.

Do you have any piccies so we can see to make sure its mites?

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry you are having to deal with difficulties so early on with your new piggie.

Pet shop piggies often have skin problems, it's not uncommon for them to have mites and/or fungal infections before you even buy them.

Personally I would be dubious about using the PAH vets - some say the animals get vet checked routinely, but a vet who fails to pick up on obvious health problems is not a very good one!

The best idea I have heard is to take the pig to your own vet, one who has some training and experience with guinea pigs, and complain to PAH and ask that they refund you the vets bill.

I'll try to take some pics and show you to tell me what * think. I hope it's nothing serious. Thanks for replying :)

No problem

If its fungal, you can always contact Chrissy at www.gorgeousguineas.co.uk who is fab and will recommend what to use if you send her the piccies too.

Shes fast at delivery too and replies really quickly.

We'll get the piccies up and have a look for you.

Please remember though, although we can give our personal opinion and advice, if you are unsure or worried, please go to a vet!

Something like this though should be easily sorted!

Hi and welcome! :)

Animals in petshops go through a lot of stress so it could be mites. Is the skin flakey where the hair is missing?

I would get him to a vet for a diagnosis and also let the store know where you got him from so they can pay for his treatment which they should as you have only just got him. :)

He's still a bit anxious and he won't let me take a pic of him yet.. I didn't want to touch him in the balding part of his body cause I was afraid I might hurt him. I did however to check what's going on and I noticed that there are some really short hairs over there,as if they're growing right now. Does this happen in a case of mites or fungal infection?

Yes it can do. The fur can fall out and then sometimes re-grow, only to fall out again if not treated. I think it's mites. You need to take your piggie to the vet who will give your piggie a treatment called ivomectin. The fur will re-grow in time.

Ok thanks very much for your advice. I'll watch him closely to see how he is and if I don't see any improvement I'll take him to a vet.

Yes i think its mites from the sounds of it.

I think as its the first time and so young, i would suggest the vets to treat him for this.

Hope all goes well, keep us updated!

He does need to go to a vet, mites won't go away without the treatment. :)
