My guinea pigs hair began thinning a while ago, we treated him for mites and fungal in case but he had neither. Today we've noticed dramatic hair loss around the rump. Hes lost the hair on both of his rear sides as well as his rear end. There are almost bald spots. It's so close to hardly being fur at all. It doesn't look like it's any parasite, we will still give him a course of ivermectin but I'm not sure if that's what it is. It was hard to photograph but any ideas?

How old is your piggie?
I know hair loss can often be a sign of ovarian cysts, but if he is a male then we can probably rule that out straight away. ;)
Guinea pigs can suffer a myriad of skin complaints, so if you have treated for all of the obvious ones, then it is probably time to take him along to a vet where they can do more in depth testing.
 
Best to get him checked by a piggy savvy vet for a diagnosis. If parasites are ruled out he will need a full MOT to determine if there's a medical issue causing his hair loss.

Definitely needs a trip to the vets. Please don't treat on spec at home. He needs a proper diagnosis and treatment at the correct therapeutic level.
 
He was checked over by a piggy savvy vet just short of two weeks ago I believe, I've only just noticed the bald patches but wouldn't the vet have noticed any early signs of anything? The piggy savvy vet lives 1 and a half hours away, because he just got the all clear after being ill 7 weeks, my mum keeps saying that I pick out every slight thing and that he's probably fine I'm just worried about nothing. It was a mess about getting him to the savvy vet as my dad had to take us both and since he and my mum are divorced they were yelling and arguing with each other almost the whole way there and no one was impressed to be going in the first place. Sorry for the entire story lol, I just don't think I am in a position where I can go to the vet, especially since the vet bills cost £300 the last time... the vet that we would usually take him to would most likely give him an injection to stop parasites even though I don't think that's what it is at all, but they probably wouldn't let me go anyway as they'd have to be in a car with each other, even if it's only for 20 minutes.
Edit- I just told my mum that maybe we need to see a vet, before I could finish my words she shouted at me and said that he isn't seeing one.

He is a 3 year old male :)
