Hello we are new here. we are so happy to have found this website. We have just brought in our guinea pigs for the nights as it is too cold and we have noticed that our two female young guinea pigs are losing lots of hair. should we worry? and what shall we do? thanks olivia and 7year old Sam

Hi and welcome to the forum. When you say they are losing lots of hair do you mean they are shedding a lot or that they have bald patches? If they have bald patches then a trip to the vets for a correct diagnosis and treatment is necessary, even for mites home treating without knowing what you are dealing with could make the matter worse. If they are just shedding a lot then it could just be the change in temperature and adjusting their coat. If this is the case then keep an eye out for any signs of a problem such as flaky skin and increased itchiness which might indicate something behind the shedding

oh thank you so much. not it is only shedding lots of hair and some small bald patches behind the ears. they don't seem to be uncomfortable with it. do you still think a trip to the vet is necessary?

Bald patches behind the ears is normal. In 4 out of 5 of mine it is easy to see. With Betsy it is a bit more difficult and I have to search for hers as she has so much fur than the other 4 but it is still there. The only time to worry is if they red and inflamed, crusty or sore in any other way.

Basically, the forum will always say if you are concerned that there may be a problem then always seek vet advice. However, as Betsy said a small bald patch behind each ear is very normal but is more noticeable in some pigs. You should be able to tell as they will be in the same place on both piggies but I will see if I can find a photo

oh thank you so much for your advice and help! that's really really helpful. i am so happy to have found this website.
