I wonder if any of you can advise. One of my sows has some hair loss on her rump: see attached photo.
The skin seems fine underneath, there is no dandruff or signs of injuries or bites. It doesn’t seem to be mites to me, and no evidence of anything in her fur. Otherwise her coat seems thick and glossy. No change in behaviour, no scratching, eating well, no weight loss, eyes seems bright, doesn’t appear to be in pain. Other pigs in herd seem healthy and have no sign of fur loss. I have not noticed any barbering and cannot see anything that she may have rubbed it on.
I am going to take her to the piggy vet, but thought I’d ask on here first in case it’s something I can solve at home and avoid the stress for her. She doesn’t seem to be bothered by it at all and doesn’t mind it being touched.
She is almost 2 years old, quite a lazy quiet pig, and one of the lower ranking of the herd. She is definitely not pregnant and never has been.
Any ideas of what it could be? I don’t want to just treat for mites with it being the most obvious cause, as like I said, there doesn’t seem to be any other evidence for this.

Only a vet can tell you if anything is wrong.
Glad you’ve got an appointment for her.
Hope it’s nothing serious.
Please let us know how you get on

Hi! Hair loss like this in the middle of the back is generally typical for start of mange mites, but we cannot diagnose reliably just from a picture and we most strongly do not recommend to treat on spec with low dosed shop products.
What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

This happened to one of my pigs, George, it was lice and I had treated him with guinea pig mite spot on, he lost his hair first and I thought it had to do with the other pigs but then he started to fit and got an eczema type skin rash, it was touch and go, the vet treated him with antibiotics and small puppy spot on, he stopped fitting and his skin cleared up and his hair grew back.

Pipsy has been seen by the vet and fortunately it is not mange mites but barbering by her husboar, as she is his special lady! Very relieved and thanks for the responses!
