I noticed today that toffee has a smallish patch on her side where her fur seems to have fallen or been pulled out. The skin is not red or flakey, it doesnt look sore or irritated at all, and it is only in one area. I just wondered if anyone has experienced this or knows what it might be? She seems fine in her self, up to her usual mischeif.

Can GP's get alopecia? Or am i being my usual over paranoid piggie mummy?

Thanks x

A bit more info too please - her age, last mite treatment, cagemates, a photo of the area as well as a shot from directly above her so her body shape is clear. All this will help give a clue as to what is going on - mites, hormonal hairloss, ovarian cysts causing discomfort, etc.

Obviously only a vet can make an informed diagnosis so I would advise you to get her seen for a general check and once you know a bit more then I'm sure there will be advice that is more relevant to her problem - should she have one.

Ok we got her as a baby late Feb this year. So she is only about 6 months old. She had her last mite treatment in may, (we have a family friend who is head rodentologist at our vets, we take our pigs to her once evey 3 months for a check up, nail trim, ear clean etc) I tried to get some pic before i posted last night night but you couldnt really make it out, i'll try again later. The area is on her side where her tummy bulge is, its not particularly big.

I have jumped to the conclusion that it is ovarian cysts, i have read on the lynx site and through an older post on here, i'm at work at the mo and so upset, i'm so worried.

She is only a baby, i have a few questions:

It seems asthough cysts normally occur with older sows, is Toffee too young at approx 6 months?

I have read about vets advising to leave them, how long untreated would she live for? ( i will do all i can, hormone injections, draining, even hystorectomy if i have to, i will do all i can for the little angel, (i love her so so much) whatever the cost.

When i take her to the vets, they will want to do an x-ray to confirm it is cysts, will she need to be put under GA for this? Can i request that she isn't?

What actions can i take to slow it down for her? (i.e. foods to give and not to give etc)

I have only come to this conclusion after reading through the other threads, other than mites which i'm 99% it isnt, could anything else be causing the hair loss? as i said there is no irritation or flakey or red skin.

I'm one very upset piggy mum.

dont panic...!
dont jump to conclusions...!
i'd get her looked over by the vet...
coco has a massive bald patch on her side.... i origionally thought it was mites that had healed...(was there when i picked her up...
but the vet thought it could have been stress and she'd pulled it out herself...
as it doesnt fit a normal "mites mark" what ever that is....rolleyes

I have called the vets, they said ovarian cysts would normally mean the hair falling out both sides and general thinning of hair and as it isn't thinning and is only one side it may be mites or it is more likely the pigs have been barbering each other.....? I am going to call tomorrow to book an app at the vets for a check over.
