we recently rescued 2 long hair piggies they are so matted and the mats go right down to the skin. the mats are huge lumps of poop, hay etc all munched together.
we tried to cut them off but the piggies squeeled there heads off so we thought we might be hurting them.
can someone please help with this problem, any advise would be greatly appreciated!
thanks :-\

Hi love welcome to the forum from us in OZ :)
and well done to you for rescuing these gorgeous little piggies :smitten:
If you're in the UK you can get the gorgeous guineas shampoo etc... i think the girls say this can help
I'm sure people with long hairs will be able to answer this better than me :)

Mine get knots (even if they are groomed daily).

I normally cut halfway through the knot, trimming a little bit off at a time. Gorgeous guineas do some great shampoos/conditioners that would help tease them out. However if you just add water they become a nightmare to remove.

HTH :)

If you have only just rescued them that might be why they were squealing as they arent used to being groomed and they need to be able to trust you a little more. Some piggies just don't like it at all, My texel tilly is fine having a bath but when it comes to brushing or a trim she hates it. I would just keep having a go at it each day if there are 2 of you doing it that might help and some treat in the form of their fav food may take their mind off it for a second whilst you get it off.

I recently took harry in he is a merino Boar and had never been groomed he looked like this when he came in

It took one person to hold him and I trimmed him carefully making sure I didnt catch the skin,he did shout all the way through it :(

when I finished he looked like this

he is now in a great new home and is looking fantastic

Harry still doesnt like being groomed but i think he associates being groomed with the pain of having his hair pulled

I had the same thing with a guinea a while back. I answered an ad on gumtree from a woman who lived near me asking if someone could help her bath her piggy. The poor thing was in an awful state. I brought round gorgeous guineas aloe vera melt and massaged that into the matted areas, teasing the matts with it. I then cut through the matts a little at a time until I got near to the skin but I kept my fingers by the skin (if that makes sense) so I didn`t cut her. I then bathed her in posh and go shampoo. I gave her 2 good shampoos and rinses and this made it easier to cut the rest.
She did squeal but this was the huge matted part by her bottom end pulling her skin. You just have to stick with it really :(
