My guinea pig is just over a year old. When I’ve been cleaning his bits I’ve noticed that he has hairs coming out his anus. I’m not sure what they are. I’ve been searching for it but it doesn’t say it anywhere. He’s had it since I’ve gotten him. Never seemed like a problem before. I just want to know what it could be and if it will cause any problems for him. Can anyone help me out?

Hi!

Are these hairs fixed? That would be new to me.

All piggies but especially boars wipe the floor with a scent gland, which is sitting just in front of the genitalia to mark their territory by adding to the group scent. This means that they can also pick up debris (including she hairs) from the floor of their cage. Some piggies do this more enthusiastically and they can be very mucky as a result!

The hairs are quite long and in a little bunch. I don’t know where they’ve come from but when I brought him home he had it then as well when he was like 3 months old

He must obviously pick them up somewhere. Could it be human hair?

No. It’s his fur. But it’s some how attached. It doesn’t harm him. His brother that we got from the same place doesn’t have it and neither did any of the others. I’m not sure what it could be but he’s had it since before I got him

I have never come across any fur growing out of the anus; so this is rather unusual.

Are you sure it’s not stray bits or hay? Perhaps you could post a clear photo of what you mean.
