I have 2 10 week old boys that have been here since they were 1 day old, over the last few days I have noticed the hair starting to go thin, on their chest and inbetween their front legs.

They have been to the vets but we have very little idea what it could be, we don't think it's mites, or lice and the are in the same room as other piggies and all the others are fine. It has been suggested it might be an allergy to hay, but I have no idea.

Anyone have any suggestions? These boys are reserved and were supposed to be going to their new home this weekend, but we can't let them go until we find out what is causing it.

Hmmm how odd! :S It's not a fungal infection is it? I don't know what it could be, sorry :( but i hope the little fella's improve soon, and will be in their new home happy and healthy :)

No idea I'm afraid. Have you asked Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas if she's come across this before? Might be worth a try.

Hey Vicky, have the boys been treated for mites anyway? I am sticking my neck out a little bit here, but according to CCT it's been heard of for pigs to develop an oedema (fluid retention) under the neck, as a reaction to dead mites.

Reason why I bring this up is that I am wondering if there is any chance the hair thinning in that area is anything to do with mites or a reaction to dead mites. As such I would personally treat for mites as usual (doses obviously reflecting their age and weight), and also give them a bath in either an anti-fungal or anti-parasitic shampoo between ivermectin doses.

Hi laura,

They haven't been treated with anything at all yet. I will treat them for mites and give them a bath and then we can take it from there.

Thank you
