Is anyone able to help me identify what this spot on the back of one of my boys is from? :(

It randomly appeared in about a day, and my other boy does not have any spots. Both are quite young, with a normal diet.

Please have your piggy seen by the vet. I’m not entirely sure on it, so won’t make any guesses.

Hi and welcome

Please have your boy vet checked for potential ringworm, a highly contagious fungal skin infection that can jump species (including transmitting to and from humans). The period between infection and acute outbreak is 10-14 days, so the infection can have already spread. Invisible ringworm spores are very long lived and are shed in their thousands in an acute outbreak, so good hygiene is of utmost importance.

Please do not home treat on spec. There is also a chance that you are dealing with mange mites which requires different treatment. Broad spectrum pet shop products are too low dosed and a waste of money in an acute outbreak in either case. Only a hands-on vet examination will tell you what exactly you are dealing with (we can only guess and not replace a vet), so you can treat with proper products and get on top of it in the shortest possible time once and for all instead of embarking on a messy and disheartening journey that can last months and prolong the unnecessary suffering of pets in your care. Do NOT put anything on the spot before you see a vet; it is like wiping the crime scene and will only serve to frustrate the vet as it will make their job of a proper diagnosis very difficult.
Your hygiene at home is as important to prevent any recurrance and the spread of any infection.

In newly bought guinea pigs you can reclaim any vet cost from the pet shop as you have in effect been sold damaged ware.

Thank you for the feedback! Just set up an appointment for him as soon as Friday. :soz:I am very worried and a little stressed out. I hope things will be okay with him, as well as my other pig.

The sooner you can have him seen the better, as the outbreak will continue to worsen over the next 5 days. It is not an emergency but the sooner you can get on top of it, the easier it is going to be; especially as disinfectant is currently in short supply.

Both of my boys have ringworm. I'm trying my best to treat them with the medication my vet prescribed, luckily it hasn't spread more than the 1 spots they both have. However my boy Charli's is very very bad and in a tough spot.

Hi!

What treatment have you been prescribed and how long have you been treating for? when you look at the pictures in our ringworm guide, you will see that it gets worse before it can get better. It looks very sore though, poor boy!

Please be aware that hygiene is of utmost importance as ringworm is single most transmittable issue between most common pet species and humans.
