Hi,

Biscuit is going to be 7 years old in April. The right side of his bottom has been wet for 3 days. This has never happened before.

History:

I took Biscuit to the vet last July because his poop was abnormal. The doctor gently massaged/ expressed Biscuit’s perineal sac and poop started coming out like a little “poop machine” lol. He said it wasn’t bad, but that I should do that every week. About 3 weeks later (because his poop looked normal), I tried to do what the vet had done, and nothing came out like at the doctors. I was afraid I was hurting him, and that I wasn’t doing it right, so I stopped. I didn’t really worry because his poop looked fine, and I never tried again.

Two months later, in September, Biscuit went back to the vet for a check up. I told the vet what happened, and he showed me again how to do it. He also said the same thing. That it wasn’t bad, and that instead of weekly, I could just check every 2 weeks. Since September, I might have tried once, and again, nothing came out.

Since half of his bum has been wet for the last two days, I’ve been really concerned and feeling guilty, I wondered if it was my fault, and I tried again. Just one little poop came out, and it was one that had already started coming out, or was “stuck”, because I saw it when I picked him up. I left him alone for a few seconds to rest, frustrated that poop didn’t come out like at the vets office. He started yanking at the little threads on the towel he was on, on my lap. He was annoyed and wanting me to put him back in his cage. So, I put him back and when I went to go check on him a few minutes later, I saw fresh poop around him 😌, and he was eating a couple of them. I thought, maybe he was annoyed because he doesn’t like pooping on me, and wanted me to put him back, so he could poop in his cage.

Anyway, what do you think could be causing half of a wet bum? Has anyone gone through any of this…boar, half a wet bum, perineal sac issues, older piggie, etc.

Hi

It could be arthritis or another pain issue, causing your boy to prefer to lie mostly on one side of the body and no longer be able to bend and tidy himself up.
It also sounds like he is suffering from impaction, which is affecting about 10% of boars, mostly older ones. Impaction (the inability of expressing poos) is caused by a weakening of the muscles in the back. If that is not quite even, his preference for lying on one sdie could also be caused by just the impaction.

Please have him vet checked because treatment for arthritis is a mix of long term painkillers, which are prescription-only in the UK, and glucosamine, which is not and which you will have to buy yourself. We can advise once you have a diagnosis.

You may find these two guides here helpful:

This link here gives you a more general overwiew about the most common challenges you are facing with older piggies.

Oh no. Thank you for your prompt response. You guys are always awesome.

Yes, the doctor said last March he had a little bit of arthritis in his spine. He’s been on Meloxicam since. I made an appointment for him. He’ll be seen in two days. He’s eating and pooping fine. He even pop-corned a few times and ran around once inside his cage. You think he’ll be fine till Thursday morning. It’s Tue. 1:53pm over here atm. His weight is also normal. Or do you think I should make and emergency visit appointment?

Thanks again 🫶🏻

Hello
It’s hard at first to remove impaction - my boar is 6 and for the last year or so I’ve removed it. It comes out as a soft lump -
I’ve added a link to Saskia at the LA guinea pig rescue that demonstrates how to do it
Just remember it’s not hurting the piggy but the relief for them is immense
Good luck

Hi

Please take a deep breath. This is not an emergency!

Have a look at his bits to be on the safe side but it rather looks like his arthritis has spread and may need a higher maintenance dose of metacam and some extra glucosamine food supplement to help with coating the joints and make movement easier.
Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

Have a look at our impaction guide with several videos to see whether that applies or not - although you won't be dealing with a bad case as in the videos, just the beginnings of it at the most. I have included it because you mentioned the irregular pooing.

I admit, I've tended to give up in the past when I should have been doing something regular for my guineas, like syringe feeding, because I found it so difficult and emotionally strenuous. (I no longer have guineas partly for that reason.) I think I'm hearing that a little bit with the impaction issues with your boar? I just want to encourage you to watch the videos at the links that have been shared and just try regularly. iirc fresh poo may come out but impacted poo might still be stuck so it's good to check regularly.

Good luck with Biscuit and healing vibes to him.

Hey. Thanks. I do get anxious because he’s 6, this is only my third piggie, and the way the first two passed was traumatizing for me. I’m glad I have those links you sent me. I suspect I may know what it was 🙄 , although I don’t want to jump to conclusions just yet. I’ll see how dry he is in the morning. It’s 11pm right now. I checked the wet spot earlier tonight and half of it had dried. I’ve caught him a few times today sprawled out as if he’s letting it air dry, which he doesn’t do very frequently because he loves being in the pocket of his liner. I’ll keep you updated. :)

Please have him vet checked; his arthritis may have got worse and is impacting on his impaction by adding extra pain; not to mentioning him no longer being able to lick himself clean down below. That is not at all uncommon at this age but it can be partially reversed with a higher level of pain med, joint supplement and some simple dietary measures.
