Hamlet

We took Ophelia to the vets the other day, together with Hamlet and our notebook recording weight. It was quite embarrassing to go to a vet who doesn’t know us (and so isn’t familiar with the level of care we give them) with one very underweight piggy (I will update the Ophelia thread) and one somewhat overweight… The vet immediately understood the difficulty of trying to get one to put on weight, chuckled as she looked through the notebook and saw Hamlet’s inexorable weight gain (Ophelia’s not budging), and then picked him up for a cuddle, calling him a ‘lovely chomp’ :) He can still get airborne in his frequent popcorns, though😂

It’s hard to believe that Ophelia is the one stealing from his bowl. His eating speed has picked up since he joined Ophelia and he has learnt to run away with particularly tasty morsels.
 
Ophelia has been increasingly curled up and we think she’s nearing the end… we’re worried about Hamlet after she dies because we can’t keep him. He is very sweet and has been by her side since they started living together. He will be devastated. Is there someone who would like to offer a very gentle neutered two year old a loving home?

Yes, we're worried about him when she dies. He has been devoted to Ophelia and is very settled with us (after a bad start in life). It was quite striking that when we left them with friends for a week, he didn't show his face. I had told them how lovely it is when he popcorns in the evening at clean-out time, but he would only come out when they weren't there. When we went to pick them up, Hamlet eventually emerged from under a huge pile of hay and popcorned when he heard my voice. That was lovely but it shows that it's going to be hard for him to move on.

I would rather not take him back to the Blue Cross to be rehomed as I would like to know that he will be with people who know about guinea pigs and how to care for them... Having said that, we were clueless but our learning was much accelerated thanks to this forum!

So, a lovely home needed for a lovely boar ...
 
He is still quite young so could adapt once the right home has been found. Being neutered hopefully he will be placed with some friendly sows who will take care of him, poor little chap. Yes, they become very devoted to the people they live with and can take a while to warm up to strangers 🥰
 
Hamlet didn’t move from the hay he had been in when we took Ophelia, and hadn’t touched his vegetables. We put Ophelia in the run but he didn’t come out. Eventually he did and sniffed her and then we thought he would lick her but instead he pulled out a basil leaf from under her. Then he went over and ate his veggies before going into the sleeping area to eat hay.
