HELP!

My piggy is very ill and we have been to the vets a number of times including this morning when she has had her first antibiotic/pain relief injections! She has been eating fine up until today (she has a bad eye which needs removing so the chewing is sore on her).

She had some mushed up food which I did for her to be syringe fed earlier but she wouldn't take it out of the syringe only off my fingers, this was about 4pm. She now won't eat AT ALL from hand, syringe etc. I have tried for the past 2 hours and no joy.

What shall I do?
She needs her strength as she has her operation Tuesday.

I am trying not to stress around her as I know how sensitive she is right now.

Any advice will be welcomed.

Thank you

Hi! I recently had to hand feed my pig with a syringe and the only way to do it was to add ribena squash (undiluted) into the syringe with the food/medicine. The vet recommended this to me x

Thankyou all. It is greatly appreciated. A few mouthfuls managed and we've agreed tomorrow is every two hours feed and we are in it together (she didn't agree but mummy knows best) x

You could also maybe phone your vet in the morning to see if Fibreplex will help.

if you can, try to get up once in the night to get a bit more food into her before the morning. Every little helps!

PS: give her lots of praise and encouragement for every little she eats.

Have you tried any of her favorite veggies? Even if you grate them it can be helpful. Baby food added to the mix can be helpful but not too much as its sugary. Glad shes taking a little. As Wiebke advises, getting up in the night would be beneficial. In hospital we often feed guinea pigs and rabbits who are not eating every 4 hours.

Hope all goes ok.

x.

Morning all,

Bon Bon has eaten 4 teaspoons this morning, a mix of mushed pellets and grates cucumber/carrot! A good start to the day and we are going to try every 2 hours in the day time.

She was enjoying the praise as well and this also relaxed me much more too which I think perhaps helped.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I OWE YOU ALL ALOT AND MY BON BON SENDS SQUEAKING LOVE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR CHILLING OUT HER MUMMY.

I know that there is a long road ahead of us but Bon Bon and I are determined, she has shown me that this morning by taking her medication and some food.

Thank you all x

That's good to here, I hope she'll continue to eat. Will she eat a bit of fresh grass? It's very rare that mine will refuse it. I was sat with one of my foster pigs last night & he sat on my knee eating grass for about 40 minutes until he decided to wee!

Ha they pick their moments to wee don't they.

I went to check on her and have spent the last 15 or so minute while she managed a little fresh carrot (grated very tiny - about 6 bits not much I know but a start) then she has managed just under another teaspoon of her pellet mush. I was going for every 2 hours but she was stood beside the dish dipping her head in which told me she fancied a little food.

Will try the fresh grass on the next round, she loves it so am sure she'll manage some :-) at least I hope so x
