I'm new to guinea pigs. I got one two days ago. I know they're known to be skittish but I seriously CANNOT pick one up!! I researched on how to hold them and I tried it but I'm just NOT doing it right! It kicks me all the time! My mom and dad do it perfectly fine! I think I'm just scared..:( I saw the dude that got my guinea pig out do it perfectlyy ..=[ I just wanna hold it and pet it!...any tips?

I know it's hard but try not to be nervous as the piggy will sense it. Guide it into a corner, put one hand infront of its face and then one under its bottom. Hopefully you'll have a bit more success at picking him/her up then.

Also, just a thought but piggies tend to be a lot more nervous when they are kept on their own. They are sociable animals and need to be with their own kind otherwise they can get very lonely...any way your parents would let you keep two?

I was gonna get two males, but the petco guy advised us not to because they could possibly fight when they're adult sized. so my mom and dad said to only get one. and because of that I'm sure my parents are not gonna let me get another one.

Grrrrr! It really annoys me when pet stores give out bad advice- of course there is always a risk that any pair of animals will fight when they grow but it's not really fair to keep one on his own unless you plan to give him lots of attention. I too was advised to keep a boar on his own but soon got him a friend as he seemed so nervous and sad; the difference was immediate. Two happy piggies.

Many of us on the forum have boars together without issue.

That's such a shame, pairs of boys are fine together normally, especially if they're from the same litter or only young. How old is your piggy? They do need company of their own kind...

Can you try holding him in a towel, to make him feel secure( and protect you from his claws!)

the guy said he cant be sure if the two guinea pigs were from the the same litter so he advised me to only get one. the guy was like..20 years old. i guess not trustableee? =/ i really WOULD get the other one since it was only 2 days ago. but it might not be there anymore and my mom would really not be happy about it..=/ and since theyve been separated for two dayss..would they fightt when they reunited?

It is difficult especially if with parents. Luckly I have bought my own place but If I had been living at home my mum would not have let me have two boys she tried to talk me out of getting tiger but I wanted george to be happy. Could you consider getting the boy neutered and getting a girl?

The best way I have found of picking george up is to quick and definate with you actions aim to pick him up at first attempt rather than chasing him about. He squiggles when you first pick him up but I foudn if I hold him to my chest straight away he feels more relaxed as he has something to sit on rather than being in mid air! :)

omg thanks! that helps alott. :] i get even MORE nervous when my dad or brother is watching mee D: about the two guinea pig part. i will definitely not get my own place until....long timee...-__- I'm obviously not as old as you. lol
I'm sure my parents arent gonna let me get the second guinea pig anywaysss. but what would result in my guinea pig since it has been separated from the other piggie i saw in the cage since it has been away from it for 2 days? since i have not mastered holding my piggie yet, i probably cannot handle two at once. my cage is also pretty squishy for two piggies. it is 30 by 18? somewhere like thatt. HELP PLEASEEE. i really dont know wht to do. i want my piggie to be happy. i still have not brougght it out of the cage because my dadie says I'm going to fast and the pig is still familiarizing itself with mee. =/ he says ill get to take it out this thursday

I was given the same advice they werent sure if they were both from the same litter etc i asked how long they had been together and stuff and decided that i would take the risk and if they didnt get on to just divide the cage up! I had a bit of grumbling and bum wiggling at first but now they are happy together.
