I own 2 guinea pigs willow 1 and blossom 4 ,blossoms was taken to vets today and found out she has a tumour she has already lost alittle weight but is eating fine the vet said i have two choices give her painkillers and she will last around 4 months or be spayed where she is at risk of the anesthetic ,heart failure and because things may need to move around risk of her gut shutting down ,I'm unsure what to do i dont want her in pain and obviously want longer with her or risk the operation in hope she will get through it? And if goes wrong what do i do about little willow last year my other cherry died from unknown causes? Please help

If she has been healthy up until now Id go ahead with having her spayed.
Anaesthesia is much more refined nowadays so not as much risk attached.
As the tumour will probably continue to grow it will either push other organs out of its way or begin to invade them so pain relief could be quite difficult.
Sorry to not be more positive.
Sending her hugs.

They gave her a scan and have said it was a tumour id asked about a cyst but the vet seemed quite certain

Damn... Was hoping you could have opted for hormonal treatment there... Can you tell us more about the tumour itself? Whereabouts is it? Is a biopsy an option?

It's a horrible position you're in. Whereabouts are you? What vet are you using?

Oh poor little lamb... I've heard good things about that vets. Sadly nobody can make the choice for you. But if she's otherwise healthy and active and alert, I think in your position I would go for the surgery. It does sound as if there is very little other option :( And she's not an old lady, she's in a good position for it.

Before I knew Biscuit had more than one lump I was given that decision. I looked at her quality of life, I had just lost one to cancer and I considered the care I could give of she had the op (she is 6) to be honest I would ave spayed her but it's such a personal decision.

You are always going to be second guessing in this kind of situation. If we could see into the future it would be easy to see what the right choice is but we can't so we can only go on what we believe is right. Personally I would go with the op as a means to give quality of life back, that said it's not me that is emotionally invested here and it's relatively easy to sit back and say "oh I'd do this or the other". For me personally I would always question whether the op would have been the better choice if I didn't go for it. You and your vet know Blossom best though, if you are unsure speak again to the vet to get a feel for how much of a risk she thinks there actually is with the op. They have to be honest about risks but I don't think she would be willing to do the op if she thought the risk was too high?

That's fantastic news! So glad it went well, let her rest and you can spoil her in the morning :)

That’s great! Streaky had 2 lumps on his stomach, there was a huge lump in the middle of his stomach which became very inflammed, tried 2 lots of antibiotics and it didn’t stop them so opted for an operation, I also had a good think about his quality of life, he’s 4 years old and has the rest of his life ahead of him!

Well done for going for the op. Unfortunately I didn't really have the option, when a tumour was found in Molly, they operated but the tumour was everyone, attached to all her organs. In the end we had to have her put to sleep.
I really can't say how happy I am, that Blossom has pulled through. Give her lots of hugs from me.

I missed your thread before now. All of my 3 current sows have had a full spay on health grounds and have recovered well. Little Holly had hers 2 weeks ago. First night they need to rest and some supported feeding but next day all were well on the mend. I hope that Blossom has a peaceful night and that you can also relax too x
