He is already getting brave, officially owned him 24 hours now :) I am going to equip his hutch with a mirror so he has some company whilst hes recovering from his....'chop' :embarassed:

I have been giving him lots of cuddles and been doing lots of talking, and i let him see the others today and he seemed happier that he wasnt completely alone, I pointed Merry & Rosie out who will soon be in his 'harem' O0

Only a couple of weeks and he'll be with friends.
 
He is lovely. My mum's cousin's daughter is called Harley after the bike! ::)

More of a boys name I think, suits him perfectly! :)
 
yup after his castration he has to be alone for 6 weeks, then I will slowly get him with Merry & Rosie ^-^ 0:)
 
Vets usually say about 5-6 weeks. I left Murphy 4 weeks before Romey moved in. Some people were saying three weeks some even two. I wouldnt rush him though as its not fair to risk him hurting himself and bursting stitches thats if he has stitches as some are glued.

Are you going to keep him inside once he has his op? Just that he will need to be off Hay bedding for a few weeks. Plus he will need to keep warm after the op. :)
 
awww cute, well he is currently outside, I cant really have him indoors because of the dogs, how is he suppose to stay warm if I cant have him on hay? advise please :)
 
Get some vetbed ASAP, it must be very uncomfortable for him lying on hay at the moment.
 
so how would that replace hay....do you just lay it on top of the shavings?

ETA: I have found some vet bed but I am unsure of size, with the hutch I have probably the 19" x 15" would be best :D I will get some ASAP - on petsgalore its £6.54 for the smallest size (19" x 15")
 
Vetbed doesn't go on top of the shavings, you don't have any shavings. You line the cage with newspaper and then you place the vetbed, which you cut down to the size of your cage/hutch, over the top of the newspaper. Simple as that. You need to change the vetbed at the worst every week (and change the newspaper underneath daily).

However, can I ask why you are getting this piggie castrated without finding out everything you need to first? I am worried that you are not even going to bring him inside during his convalesence as the weather is apparently due to get colder over the next week and a recently castrated piggie sitting oustide in a cold hutch on hay and shavings is not going to be a very happy one.

Thanks Marty for the advice. I was fool probably, I didnt like the way he was being treated, I went in a bit too quick probably without thinking - I believe I can give him a good home, hes loved and has lots of food and an acre of grass to play in. I wasn't aware that it was as ...whats the word....complicated.

I am not sure how much vetbed I will require, I will measure when I get home from work.

I can understand why you wanted to give him a good home and I have no doubt you can give him one, I was just concerned about his forthcmoing operation.

We got our vetbed from ebay, it worked out a bit cheaper than buying from a shop and you can get it in different sizes so you can work out how much you need and cut it down to size. As he will need it for several weeks you need enough for at least two strips but as long as you have a fairly sharp pair of scissors it's not too difficult to cut (just a bit time consuming).

He's a very handsome piggie by the way :smitten:
 
I rang the vet up and the assistant said to keep him on shavings and hay till his operation, and then he will advise me further - I went into P@H yesterday and then had an alternative, I couldnt believe how warm it was! i can understand why you recommend it as its nots gonna irritate and its v snuggly!

I cant find a measure to fit the whole hutch, so I am having the 24" oval and it can be at one end.

Thanks for the comments, he is pure red-dutch and his coat is so shiny, but when it gets warmer I am going to wash him :smitten:
 
ooh he's lovely, bet he can't wait to get his harem ;D
