Hi my name is breezy Ann my guinea pigs are serafina and Lulu. Serafina is just her nickname she's the one with the tumor her first name was Mr Ms guinea pig AKA my son wasn't quite ready for a girl guinea pig LOL.

It's been growing for 2 years. He wouldn't do the surgery until it got so big that she couldn't walk now they're telling me that it's $2,000 almost.

I’ve no experience but wanted to offer support. Poor girl, that does look painful. I think given they let it grow that big before dealing with it, I would consider finding another vet to see. However, I know that’s difficult in the US given the scarcity of vets with experience in treating piggies. Did you have her seen by another vet or just the one you mention? And has it grown to that size over the two years?

Did they say it was a fatty tumour or mammary tumour? At that size I can’t really tell. I hope you can get her sorted really soon.

PS please can you add your location to your profile. It makes it easier to tailor information dependent on where you are in the world. State or country is enough 🙂

I’ll tag @Wiebke @PigglePuggle @VickiA

Thanks for replying it means a lot. It really blew up to that size over the past 3 months really bad. They pulled a biopsy and said they couldn't see any cancer cells but then the last time I had her in with a cold a different but at the same place did X-rays of her chest cuz she was afraid that it had spread to her chest so she's had it since she was a baby and then she's gotten so big I was thinking it was more of a mammory thing too. She has been my best friend for 3 years told me when I was going into labor before I knew saved my life because my kidney was shutting down and I didn't know it she bit and chewed on me until I realized how despondent I was and got help they are the most amazing animals I've ever owned. She has enriched my life. There is really only one vet down here that deals with guinea pigs bird and pet hospital aloha on eau gallie

Sorry to hear there’s only one vet. I’m afraid you’ll have to go with what they say. That needs dealing with soon as possible I think. It can’t be comfortable and could potentially be painful as well.

Have you got her booked in for the surgery?

I'm not computer savvy I'm in the United States Brevard county Florida. Now I know it's gotten to the point. I just can't believe $2,000 it's nuts. Okay glass and thank you I'm going to take her love her so much.

Hi and welcome!

In order to add your state (just so we can place you roughly on the map whenever you post), you click on your username on the top bar, then click on account details and go to location. This makes it come up on the left of every post you are making and allows us to switch to US conditions/climate/vet access and common medical brands and allows us to automatically tailor any advice to what is relevant for you. Our forum is located in the UK but we have members and enquiries from all over the world.

That is so far the most expensive operation quote I have come across on here - and I thought we had seen eye-watering ones before! This is also the largest lump I have ever seen on a guinea pig; I am really sorry you have been left out in the rain by your vet; pandemic or not. :yikes:

I am so sorry that you only have got this one vet within your reach but I agree that the lump is so huge that it needs dealing with in same way or other. :(

That is huge - I think your vet has done you and your piggy a dis-service by not removing the lump sooner.
However do look on the list above and maybe try calling around a few other vets.
Even if you have to travel further afield it may save you 100's of dollars.
Good luck and well done for giving your girl a chance.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I'm also in North America (Canada though) and I can vouch that pet treatment is SO expensive in the US and Canada. I think our area vets would come up with a similar price. It's a very significant mass and I think surgery will be your only recourse, unfortunately, though if you are able to drive a bit you may be able to price shop around, depending on the area. Most vets that treat small animals call themselves 'exotics' vets in the US and Canada. Best of luck to you and your piggie!
