Has anyone got experience of feeding Emeraid?

So today Treacle doesn’t seem to want to eat his veggies. Last night he was happily munching carrot, kale, spinach, cucumber and green pepper. I’m thinking he had quite a lot yesterday so is maybe having an “off veg” day. I’ve managed to get a fair bit of Critical Care into him today (mixed with porridge oats and banana). His nose is very congested still and he’s had his second dose of Azithroymycin this morning. I’m guessing he should be having a probiotic with this too? I will nip out to Pets At Home vets to pick up some fibreplex...I’ve been through tons of the stuff in the past few months but have run out 🤦‍♀️.

P&H also do Pro C which costs around £6, you can add it to water or sprinkle on food too x
Hope Treacle’s is feeling less snuffly very soon ☺️

Yes the my two love the taste of the pro-c powder - just make sure you don’t add it to their water bottles as it could stop them drinking if they’re not so keen. I mix it up with a small amount of filtered water then syringe it x

That is reassuring 😊. Can Tilly’s teeth not be fixed or improved?
Tilly came to TEAS after receiving treatment for over a year from another vet, without any real success. She was able to eat softened nuggets and pureed veg, but that was all. Simon was horrified by how bad her teeth were, but after just one dental from him she was able to eat grass and finely chopped veg. She was always a very quiet piggy and would just sit with her little friend. One morning I got up to find a very active Tilly, who came running along the cage and stood up at the bars looking for her food. I then noticed with horror, that her eye had ruptured overnight. No doubt all the pressure behind her eye had been causing her so much pain and now it was gone, even though she looked like something from a horror movie, bless her! She had the eye removed and bounced back and then two days later, as I was giving her her antibiotics, I felt a lump in her jaw. I tried to tell myself that I wasn't flushing the eye socket well enough and that the pus had drained down, even though I knew this wasn't it. I got her straight back to Simon who immediately diagnosed a tooth root abscess, so after having surgery on the Tuesday to remove her eye, she was back under anaesthetic on the Friday to marsupialise an abscess. I did wonder whether we should put her through it, but Tilly was home on Friday evening and eating better than she had done for well over a year. Since then Tilly has needed two weekly tidy ups of her teeth, which are all totally misplaced, but she has devised a way to make them work for her. The abscess behind her eye had eaten away at the bone and she gets food coming out of her eye socket, when she eats, but that doesn't bother Tilly. Tilly is now heading towards 6 years of age and I know she is constantly on a knife-edge, but she has such a zest for life! Her incisors are so wonky that Simon says they are in different postcodes! ha ha! She lives with two other girls and without doubt Tilly is the boss and also eats the most!

I think they sometimes overdo the veg a bit when their teeth have just been done! I've had this happen with a few of them! I've never had a piggy react badly to azithromycin and I must've had hundreds on it, over the years!

Oh my, what a story about little Tilly 😍. Sounds like she has been through so much, bless her. There are some piggies that do seem to have that fight for life in them, Tilly obviously being one and my little Treacle another. How he is still here is a mystery to me as there’s been so many nights recently when I thought he wouldn’t make it through, then I go in their room in the morning and his little face peeps out of his igloo to say hello 😍. His friend Ziggy is a huge piggy but is so loving and gentle with him and cuddles up with him to comfort him.

Sorry but I’ve got another question for you all...poo related this time 🤦‍♀️.

For some days now Treacle’s poos have been very, very tiny. I’m guessing this is due to him not eating enough. But a couple of times we’ve had this (photo attached)...it looks like a little poo bracelet. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this please?

I haven’t seen that before so I’m not of any help sorry! Hopefully someone will be along soon. Hopefully the more syringe feed and probiotic you can get into him the better his poops will be 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Oh poor little chap - are you giving him enough probiotic? You could also try poo soup if you have another healthy piggy?

How is he in himself? Is he eating better? What dose Zithromax is he on? xx
He’s on 0.3 ml twice daily of Zithromax, 0.3 ml twice daily of Loxicom and 0.1 ml twice daily of Tramadol.
Today his poos are back to being tiny again but so far not stringy. I think the cow pats yesterday might have been the result of his veg binge on the way home from Northampton on Tuesday. His breathing was still quite noisy when I got him up this morning but after he’d been up a little while and had some Critical Care, water and his meds, he seemed a bit better. Last night I took him in the bathroom with me when I ran a bath in the hole that the steam would help. I think it did a bit.
His breathing really does fluctuate throughout the day, sometimes it sounds quite bad then after a couple of hours, not so bad.

How long do you think it takes for the antibiotic to start working, in your opinion? His first dose was on Tuesday evening so he’s had 2.5 days plus this morning’s dose. Kim didn’t actually specify how long to keep him on it.
This morning he was quite bright once I got him out of his cuddle sack, he ate a fair bit of CC and some coriander, piece of cucumber, bit of lettuce and a grape. Still not seen him eating hay but he’s eating plenty of freshly picked grass (which I go out into the freezing cold garden to pick for him😉).

I find that within 3 days I start to see some improvement. Just keep going with the antibiotic until it has all gone. When does Kim see him again? I do notice that with some of the dental piggies, their breathing can sound more noisy at times and I think it is because they can sometimes struggle to manipulate the food around their mouth and it gets stuck at the back of their mouth. Often they cough and then the noise settles. Is the Tramadol a new additon to his meds? Although in most cases it's worked well with our piggies, a few have eaten less whilst on it.

Haven’t posted for a while as Treacle has being doing so well but unfortunately tonight things seem to have taken a turn for the worse. He is struggling to breathe, he even has his mouth open slightly trying to breathe. I don’t know what to do to help him, I just went in to give him his last feed of CC for the night and was shocked to see him struggling. Why do these things always seem to happen at night. Anyone still up that can offer advice please?

He’s being doing so well, his breathing and nasal congestion had got so much better since he’s been on the Zithromax so this was quite unexpected 😢

Thank you for replying at such a late hour. I have managed to get an emergency appointment at a vets so leaving in a minute. He is really struggling and I can’t bear to see him suffer so if they advise to pts then I will accept that. He’s been through so much and has fought so hard.

Just got back from the vets. They have kept him in overnight, I hated leaving him there but I know it’s for the best. The vet was going to give him a steroid injection and put him in an oxygen box to help with his breathing. Said it could go either way so I know I must prepare myself for that. If I had brought him home and he got even worse overnight I would have had to rush him straight back anyway, so at least he’s in the best place. I was expecting the vet to recommend he be pts there and then but maybe he thinks he still has a chance 🙏🤞
I won’t get much sleep tonight worrying and thinking about him but I think I did the right thing.

You’re giving him the very best chance! Hugs xx

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you that the vet has just rang to say it is kinder to put Treacle to sleep.😭 He has been in the oxygen box all night but is still struggling to breathe. They have tried to feed him but he can’t eat. Of course, it’s not unexpected but still devastating nonetheless. I just wish he could have died peacefully at home but I couldn’t let him suffer.
He has been such a little fighter for months now but I think pneumonia set in yesterday and his little body just couldn’t fight any more.
I want to thank you all for your kindness and support these past months.

RIP my little sweetheart Treacle, you were loved so much 💔

Valsie, I've been following your thread but had nothing to contribute, but have been sending Treacle and you good vibes throughout. I'm so sad to read your news. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Treacle was truly loved deeply and had the best life he could. I hope you're ok and take time to look after yourself after such an upset.
