Hi,

I'm a worrywart and want to know if I have good reason to worry. My little pig, Walnut, well, I missexed her. I thought she was a boy for a month :(
I'm embarassed about this. When I discovered she was actually a girl I removed her right away from the male she was living with. She was one month old when they separated, and 3 weeks old when they moved in together.

Do you think I have cause to worry? UGH.

Lynn

Someone please correct me if i am wrong, but I think. While a male becomes sexual mature at 3 weeks sows are not sexually mature until 5 weeks. So Walnut should be ok :)

I think you're right Saysie. And even when they do become sexually mature, I'm sure they don't always get pregnant straight away. :)

According to guinealynx, boys can become sexually mature from 3 weeks and girls from 4 weeks old; but that doesn't mean that every pig does! The earliest documented boy-girl pregnancy according to them was 24 days.

We have had cases on here where sows have got pregnant at four weeks old.

Here is the relevant link to guinealynx with all the info about pregnancy:

I am afraid that this means that it will be a long waiting game for you; a pregnancy lasts 10 weeks but you won't be able to see any signs until the second half or last third of the pregnancy.

Make sure that you weigh your girl every week. Every weigth gain of 60g over in one week should be treated as suspicious.
Keep your piggies on a good diet as recommended on the forum (as mmuch hay as they can eat (80% of their diet), 50g of mixed veg per piggy per day and unlimited pellets for piggies under 6 months old. Do NOT give mummy extra food - big babies can cause a small sow like her real problems at birth, especially if she has only one or two!
Pregnant sows need double the amount of vitamin C - one extra slice of pepper or or more broccoli will do that. If you can, give alfalfa hay for extra calcium for the pups' bones from the second half of the pregnancy through until mummy finishes nursing.

A few years ago I got a little sow, aged 6-8wks from a petshop (it was early March) 16th April she gave birth to one baby, making her 4-5wks old when caught. :(

i went to buy a guinea pig for my neutered male months ago and ended up with 2 (3 weeks old) as if i left the other one it would be on her own :( So i bought them both home and on the way i realised one was quite large ::x. I kept it quiet. my mum realised later after research, bought her to the vets and she was pregnant. She had just one baby in the early morning and it was all fine :) Is that your guinea pigs daughter in your profile picture? :)

Sorry i didnt realise you only posted this today :red When i found out this happened to my guinea pig i was worried but after a visit to the vets and research it gave me confidence that she will do well. Just keep positive and so alot of research to find help about guinea pig pregnancy and *** you can do. i bought my guinea pig timothy hay, which helps with a healthy diet and also added extra vitimins in her drink or food to help her with the pregnancy and to keep her healthy. be sure to give her many greens etc. I hope everythings okay! -It will be!- :)
