Hi

Has anyone had there female guinea pig spayed, if so was it successful.

Jaye

We have only ever had one guinea pig sapyed and this was for medical reasons sadly when the vet operated she found a lot of internal problems (was a resue piggy) and sadly a few days after the op the piggy passed away. Spaying is a majorly invasive operation that i would avoid unless clinically necessary.

I have - my Holly was nearly 4 when she was spayed at the end of March for health reasons. She's not really maintained her weight well since (which may or may not be related to the spay), so I would definitely not rush into any decision whether to spay. I agree - it's a major op.

The only vet I know who does a lot of spay operations on piggies is Simon Maddock of the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. He does all the neuter ops for Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare, who are a rescue based in Rugby, Warwickshire. Therefore he performs the op on a regular basis and is therefore very proficient.

Were you asking for any particular reason, or was it just a general query?

Mine was spayed with 4 years (she became 7 years old) because of a metritis.
The vet did a wonderful job. There weren't any complications. But it usaually is a very dangerous and very complicated operation.

Noi haven't had my Sow spayed and i wouldn't unless it was for a medical reason as like others have said its an invasive op.

I have to agree with the general consensus, unless a spay needs to be done for medical reasons I wouldn't want to risk putting a sow through such a tricky op.

Hi

We have a guinea pig that has started passing blood and has large ovaries, the blood isn't from a stone.
She would only be spayed if necessary and for a medical problem.
I just wanted to find out if anyone had gone through with a spay.

Is she still passing blood? If possible go to the vet today or no later than tomorrow. Let them make an ultrasonic.
If she really has a metritis she could easily and fast die because of it.

There are possible two treatment options: either they operate her and take the uterus and the ovaries out or they give her medicaments against it.

I had my Gerty spayed for medical reasons but she went downhill after the operation and within one week she had passed over to the bridge :...

Hi

Just to let everyone know that our little guinea pig who was to be spayed had a tumor in her bladder, so sadly we had her put to sleep, as there was nothing that could be done and she would of suffered.

Thankyou for all your advice.

Jaye

I am so sorry - it must have been so devastating for you!

So sorry, they seem to hide illness so well. You did the right think for her, a tough choice i know. At least she is suffering no pain. (((hugs))) to you.
