Has anyone used any of these vets before please? Particularly for a neutering?

Rose cottage vets
Birch health veterinary clinic
Cheshire Pet
Ashleigh veterinary centre

Also, @gizzy I know you don't live too far from me. What vet do you use and have you ever had any pigs neutered?

Okay great. My biggest worry is that both of my boys have just turned 2. I've read that under 2 is the best time to get them neutered?

@gizzy I have just rang up andale vets and unfortunately john dinsdale is now the director of the vets so doesn't do any appointments or surgery. Are they any other vets you can recommend there?

yes, we use ashleigh vets. they are well known to be the best vets in the manchester area, and are the main referral vets for alot of other practices within a very wide area so in my opinion, you won't get better. we travel 40mins each way to go there with our piggies and rabbits :)

cheshire pets is another i've heard of as being highly recommended, although i'm not sure which vet is the main one there now for piggies as molly varga left recently. she currently spends time working in different practices across the north-west. not sure where she is at the moment though.

ashleigh vets also do all the neutering of the piggies from the rspca manchester and salford branch :)

Okay thanks. I have just rang and spoken to them and they seem good. The vets is just over an hour drive from me and although I'm trying to work out how on earth I'm going to be able to do this around work i am sure that it's worth the travelling to ensure my boys are in good hands

Can you not book anytime off? The reason I say this is sometimes after an operation a piggy may need syringe fed.

Yes I am definitely going to be having at least 5 days off. Do you think this will be enough? It's just the post op check ups that may be difficult to get to with work

@biscandmatt I have found Molly varga! She is at Rutland house vet hospital in St Helens. I'm torn between her now (40 min drive) and Ashleigh vets

well molly varga used to work with aidan raftery at ashleigh vets so although i've never met molly myself, i'd use her based on all the other fantastic things people have said about her over the years.

but aidan is the vet i see and who i would trust 100% with my pets.

so it's just probably who you feel more comfortable with. i don't know much about rutland house and their other staff, out of hours care etc, so can't really comment about them. but hopefully someone else can advise. x

Jill is realy good , .its just a pitty Michele Larance is not practasing there any more

Molly Varga is excellent. She has her own website now. Cheshire Pet have a new exotics vet and she seems very good too (most of mine have seen her already!).

will check out the website. she was at a vets closer to us end of last year and i wanted to go and see her just to say i'd met her.. get an autograph etc :)):)):))

Wow she does sound good. I've got them booked in for their pre op on 7th march then they will be neutered on the 10th. Still terrified regardless of how good Molly is though. They have just turned two. I have heard people say under 2 is best, so are mine classed as more risky?

There's a risk to any animal when an operation is concerned but you have found an amazing vet which significantly reduces the risk.

I don't know about boys but I have heard great things about Molly Varga, she pioneered keyhole removal of ovaries in sows I believe & is a friend of my vet as I believe they have worked together :)

i haven't heard that before but at age two, i wouldn't have any concerns personally. i know there is always a small risk with anything, but neutering is generally very quick and straight forward :) x

@biscandmatt I'm not excited for the op but so excited for them to finally have a cage mate. I don't know if you read any of my other (countless) posts but 2 years ago I made the mistake of buying ONE baby guinea pig from a pet shop.. I wouldn't buy from a pet shop again and obviously would never get just one. I didn't know much about guinea pigs which was my second mistake and I stupidly only did my research after I got my first pig. I found out they were to live in pairs so rushed out and got another guinea pig. I introduced them and although I did do some research on the correct ways to do this, I got overly paranoid and kept separating them unnecessarily so they have lived side by side since. Obviously I've learnt from my mistakes. At first I wanted them paired through a rescue with two more boars as I was scared about neutering but I know there's a higher risk of fallouts in the future and I don't have the space for more separate cages so after changing my mind a million times I think I've made my final decision to neuter them and let my boys choose a wife through a rescue

Oh and also I'm having my 7 month old puppy neutered and surgery on his hernia the day after the guniea pigs neutering

fingers crossed that everything goes well x
