Has anyone used malaseb for washing fleece?

Hi all

Betty has had a return of ringworm (or maybe it never fully went away I’m now suspecting) so the vet wants us to throw the kitchen sink at it once and for all. So we’re going for itrafungol daily and malaseb baths twice a week for good measure (for her and her friend Winnie). I’ll be using F10 on the cage (we do anyway), washing fleece at 60 and following all the other great guidance on the guide in this forum. So I feel clear about what to do.... but the vet also mentioned putting some of the maraseb in with the bedding wash so my question is has anyone done this and if so any ideas on how much to use?

FYI Betty’s case of ringworm does not seem severe, you can’t see anything in the way of patches but she gets the little hair clusters that drop out with crusted skin on the end.

Fingers crossed this double pronged approach will finally do the job!

Any advice re putting the maraseb shampoo in the wash would be appreciated.

Hi!

Washing any fabrics in contact with a ringworm piggy (including what you yourself are wearing when handling piggies) at 60 C / 140 F will do the trick.
I would most strongly NOT recommend to use any shampoo/dip or any disinfectant in a washing machine due to foaming and environmental problems.

A dip is only needed at the start and at the end of the process to prevent any spores from being carried forward in the coat.

Please have a careful read of our hygiene guide and follow the recommendation. they are all there for a very good reason in order to cut off all possible transmission angles once and for all.

With Wiebke. We wash at 60degrees and don’t need to add any anti fungal shampoo into the wash

It is the indirect transmission via bedding, human clothes and via spores sitting loosely in the coat that most people are not aware of that is often responsible for a return. Unfortunately, we seem to be the only place who has systematically worked it out. If you follow the advice on all levels, it does actually work.

I found out that one myself the hard way when I caused an outbreak in a different group living on another level with the only shared denominator being myself. It really pays being strict for a couple of weeks for long term peace of mind. Thankfully, since the pandemic most people have more of an appreciation of hygiene and its importance!

The big problem with ringworm is it contagiousness and in just how many ways it can be transmitted to others.
