Hi everyone , ive have recently noticed that my male guinea pig has a flacky patch on his leg . He is 9 weeks old and we only got him from pets at home on Friday. Searched up symtoms and it says that it usally starts around the face ,so I'm not sure what it could be ? Should i take him to the vets?

You could get him checked by the vet your shop uses - if it turns out he needs treatment, the shop should cover the bill
Please have any new guinea pig vet checked as a matter of course. You can reclaim any cost from treatment that is necessary as a result of exposure in the shop by presenting your vet bill together with the sales receipt at the shop. This usually extends to any health problem that is cropping up between 2-3 weeks after the sale. It comes under the heading of selling damaged wares. You can also complain to the local council about trading standards if your guinea pig has been sold pregnant or with a transmittable infection or parasite infestation.
Ringworm and mange mites have their classic places where they start, but they are by no means always textbook. This is why a vet trip is so important. Please see a vet tomorrow during regular opening hours for a diagnosis and treatment if possible. If it is ringworm, please follow the hygiene advice in our guide; it is important to prevent it from spreading to others and from making a return. Ringworm is the one most transmittable and infective problem between all mammals, including other pets and humans.

I agree with the above posts. Please get him checked by a qualified vet at the pet shop for proper diagnosis and treatment. The shop should meet the cost of treatment as he was sold to you with this problem.

Do you have any idea of this is a law in Ireland too as my next piggy will unfortunately be from a pet shop?
Excuse my ignorance - Northern Ireland or Ireland? NI is covered by GB legislation (consumer law Sale of Goods Act). Ireland is EU and I have no idea about EU legislation.
You certainly have got a right to complain if your shop is selling pets that are not healthy and, as long as the exposure must have happened at the shop, you are well within EU customer rights to ask for compensation for any vet costs you incur as a result, as far as I am aware.

Okay thanks. The say they give them vitamin c supplements and treat them for mites before they leave the shop but I don't want another case of ringworm in the house. Thankfully I have two cages so I can keep the little newbie separate for a while just to make sure

That's the plan. Only problem is as my apartment is small they will be in the same room as each other, but not beside each other. Hopefully they won't get too stressed about this

Hi although ringworm does usually start on the face my first outbreak of it (only a couple of months back) started with a patch by one of the front legs and her face wasn't affected at all. Well worth getting checked out as if it is ringworm then you want to get on top of it asap
Thank you for all above ,i took him to the pets at home vets and they gave him a quick check over and gave us some medicine to give him other 10 weeks and to give to him cage mate aswell. Thank you for all of your surgestions x

Please carefully read the tips in our ringworm guide. It is VERY infective to humans, too! So it really pays to follow our advice and to invest in proper antifungal disinfectant (which most aren't). We have found out just how infective it can be the hard way; our tips come from our own experiences with ringworm.
