I'm confused over what might be wrong with my new pig Poppy. A few days ago I noticed a strong smell from the hutch. It seemed like it was coming from Poppy's poos and some of her poos were a bit soft. I thought it might have been the spring greens which I had been feeding her and Lily each day, so I stopped giving them that and any other gassy veg. I have also been noticing Poppy straining each time she goes to the toilet and a few times when I have looked all she has done is urinate, but her urine is like a cream paste. I've noticed that some of her poos have the cream powdery paste on too. I'm used to seeing this with my other pig Lily, who has recurrent cystitis. I have been giving Poppy Pro C Probiotic and occasionally diluted cranberry juice.

Earlier today I heard a squirty noise when she went to the toilet, but her poos seem to look normal.

I'm taking her and Lily to the vets tomorrow, but I just wondered if anyone knows if it is likely to be a UTI or gut problems. Also, could she have caught the UTI from Lily? I'm going to ask the vet for Septrin for Lily, as she cystitis again and she has never been given antibiotics for it, only Loxicom.

Both girls seem very well in themselves and are eating normally. Although, I think Poppy has been a bit quieter this week, but this might be normal for her as we have only had her for two and a half weeks and for most of that time she was chasing Lily around getting to know her. If anyone has any advice, it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Any crying when weeing? Guinea pig wee can come out as anything from clear to a creamy colour, any residue like grit in it?

Soft poos could be her tummy being a little bit off. How are they today?

Please let us know what the vet says

Thank you for your reply! No crying when weeing. The wee feels a bit sandy when I rub it between my fingers. I have tested Poppy's urine with a test strip twice and there was no blood. I think her poos have mostly been fine today and not so smelly. I just can't work out why she looks like she is straining when going to the toilet. When I first noticed it, she looked just like how Lily does when she has cystitis - she closes her eyes a bit and looks like she is really concentrating on going to the toilet.

It can feel powdery as that is the calcium but it shouldn't be rough and gritty

Maybe a little bit of bladder inflammation. Ask the vet about trying a bit of metacam as an anti inflammatory possibly. Lack of blood and crying is good news

What is there diet like normally?

The wee shouldn't be gritty and thick, and the fact there's no blood in dipstick but she's straining could mean it's the viscosity of the urine itself that's bothering her.

It sounds like they both may be getting too much calcium. How old are they both? What pellets, hay, veg and treats do u feel regularly?

Poppy is three and a half and Lily is nearly two and a half. They have Vitakraft Grain-free pellets, timothy hay, orchard grass and meadow hay. They normally have pepper, cucumber, lettuce, celery daily. Coriander a few times a week and kale, cherry tomatoes and carrot once or twice a week. I only give them small amounts of each veggie. Last week I started giving them spring greens (just a small amount) each morning as I read that you could give it daily. I have stopped that now, but I would like to try and give it to them a couple of times a week. I will leave it for now though. Lily gets recurrent cystitis from stress, although this week she hasn't been stressed, so I am going to ask if she can have antibiotics.

Just got back from the vets. Poppy hasn't been prescribed anything, as the vet thinks that it's her stomach adjusting to the new diet. Lily has been prescribed 2.4ml of Septrin once a day and 0.8ml of Loxicom (the dog version) for her cystitis. I just want to make sure that this sounds right? Thanks.
