Have they changed their packing or is there a new gerty? i happened to briefly notice a pack of gerty, but the cartoon guinea had been replaced with a real photo and the pack has changed colour? :)

Yes they have and they have also changed the packaging on all their other foods aswell. :)

Refuse to buy Gerty now as last batch hatched a load of maggots...yeuch couldn't get it out to the dustbin quickly enough!

Gerty Guinea Pig is a bad food anyway because it is full of chemicals. The colourants in it are linked to renal problems. It is also too high in protein.

Maryh, you've got me worried. Is Supa Guinea Excel OK? I was using P@H nuggets, but after Peggy got a bad tummy my vet suggested I change.

Damonshumanslave, I am using Supa Guinea Excel. My vet told me to change from Wagg to this, so i'm pretty sure it's good. O0

I have never used Supa Guinea Excell so cannot comment.Do you know what it contains. If the protein level is 12% or lower and it contains no colourants or molasses it will be fine.

I have been using Dorrel and Hobsons Rabbit Royale for the last 2 years and my piggies are doing fine on it. I buy it from a local feed merchant.£11.50 per 20k sack.. The prices do vary though because some friends of mine in London pay £13 for a 20k sack.

The protein content is 12%.Obviously it does not have added vitimin c but this does not matter if the piggie3s have lots of veggies and grass.

Just noticed I put the wrong name at the top of the message!.!

Just thought i'd be helpful.
Supa Excel's protein level is 17% and contains no colourants or mollases that i'm aware of.

I have the bag here. It contains 17% protien. Should I worry? It also says that it contains 'unmolassed beet pulp', which i guess means no molasses. What are fructo-oligosaccharides? It contains them. Doesnt mention colourants.

I would never feed mine on rabbit food ? i use gerty and they have changed the packet though - i know its not good but its what i can afford and they never get used to any i give them anyway :-\

I guess it depends on what caused the problems - as far as I know, the P@H nuggets are made by the same people who make Supa Guinea Excel (Burgess). The recipes are slightly different though, so it might be worth comparing the actual ingredients too...if it turns out that they contain the same ingredients but in slightly different proportions, then Excel may not be any better for her because it still has the same ingredients :-\

She just kept getting stomach upsets, and the vet felt it was best to change her food. He recommended Supa Excel. It must be a little bit different, because Peggy's tummy is much better now. I guess my vet didnt realise they are made by the same people. I certainly didnt.

Next time I go in I will compare ingredients!

I'm going to keep using it for now though, as all the pigs it it really well, and it seems to have done Peggy some good. Is Cavy Cuisine the other good one?

Perhaps it is just coincidence then!

As long as nobody thinks Supa Excel is bad or who do my pigs any harm, I'm going to keep using it. I don't want to change their food again.

Yes Gerty has changed and now here its less than 1 kg so it means the price has actually gone up! I'm still feeding gerty as my Cavy Cuisine is yet to arrive from overseas. Might be weeks before I can get it because I'm trying to get a friend to send it to me. Sigh, theres just no good pellets in this country. Theres only brands like Kaytee, Living World, Hagen etc. I think one of the more acceptable ones are Cavia Complete, based on some reviews I read but the stock here is just so dusty, so I did not continue to buy it.

after reading this thread i checked the ingredients and protein etc of both the wagg guinea crunch, and the wagg optimum.

buth have 17% protein, and neither have the bad ingredients that were mentioned to watch out for. which makes me a little less concerned about not being able to get them to eat pellets

I changed all mine over from gerty to supa excel as and when I got them and they are thriving on the excel :)

I'm with Mary on this and feed low protein dry feeds. I feed the Chudleys Rabbit Royale too and Cavy Cuisine. Sometimes I give certain pigs Performance for a while or Supreme Science.

In my opinion the Supa Guinea is better suited to a show pigs needs or a growing pig. As they sponsor guinea pig shows I assume (perhaps wrongly?) that this is their intention too. When I spoke to them about a lower protein food for pet guineas they said there was nothing in the pipeline.

I also know a good guinea vet that doesn't rate it either, but thats based on what he's seen in the surgery not a scientific study :)

Mine are on Supa Excel. I tried moving them over to cavy cuisine but they wouldn't touch it. It's also quite a bit more expensive as it has to be imported.

well 10 of my 12 piggies are going back on gerty the other 2 are allready on gerty

my oldest 2 holly and meggie are 2 years old nw and have been on gerty from day 1 and wont eat any other food mix there have never had no health problems

anyways I'm putting my other 10 back on gerty as there have been having pets at home muisal but i have found a shop where i can get big bag of gerty and ts nerar home for my dad to pick up and there like gerty better anyways

Hmm... I can walk across the street and get a bag of Gerty but I know it's no good for them so I'm not getting it. Personally I would never choose (even if I ran out of food) that food again.

Just because they like it doesn't mean it's good for them and you often have to be prepared for a bit of a battle to get them off the junk and onto something good.

I'm with you DSL. You can't see what its doing to their insides so my never know what its doing. If you want a sack of muesli Hannah Chudleys Rabbit Royale is good, though it contains alfalfa which isn't good for bladders etc :)

i do mix it with with pallats awsll and as i said my holly and meggie been on it from day 1 and never been to the vet yet and there 2 years old
