Teenage Guinea Pig
For about a week now (on and off) I have noticed a weak acidic buttery smell to Leeland's breath. The first time I sniffed it, it was followed by food stained fur around her chin and jowels. The vets went crazy about her molars but nothing was wrong with her teeth at all! It turned out to be necrotic inflamed tongue tissue which had fused her tongue to her cheek. :/ The problem was solved by several surgeries and over 5 months (and £1400) she got her weight back on.
But now the butter is back.. and the drool. I'm taking Leeland in to the vets in an hour so he can look at the molars, but she eats so well I seriously doubt he'll see a problem. To see her tongue he'll have to put her under GA because it's at the back and slightly under.. He'll need to pull her tongue forward with her mouth held open and that's not happening in a concious piggy!
Here's fingers crossed he doesnt want to put her under. :...
Oh and something useful he said to me - was that persistant odors from the breath can indicate an oral yeast infection.. Worth thinking about next time you give your little fluff balls some compulsory kanoodles.
Incidentally, does anyone know if mint leaves have an actual antibiotic effect? I'm thinking that chewing those may have some kind of benefit if it was oral infection.
