Hi guys, i wanted to update people on how Haven is doing and also ask for advice.

As some of you know one of my guinea pigs Haven was slowly loosing weight, started drinking more and also urinating loads... well i soon took Haven to the vets, who have been my vets for a few years but (since having guinea pigs the last few years, i have only been for general check ups and respiratory infections that cleared fairly quickly). Now i took along a urine sample and the senior vet who i saw was very nice and loved Haven and tested the urine and was told she had kidney failure. I was distraught and told she could have days/ weeks or months, before she went down hill. I left heavy hearted and soon started being told my vet should have done a blood test to confirm and was directed to a website that was a guinea pig clinic forum and website run by knowledgeable people who may be able to help. Now life seemed to get in the way and before i knew its a few weeks passed and i took Haven for a follow up appointment because i had since noticed a lump on her chin/neck...i also wanted to ask about doing a blood test.
I had a late night appointment after work and was seen be a second vet from the same practice...again Haven had a quick examination and was weighed and had only lost 10grams, so that was good. I asked about her lump and was told it was most likly a tumor and where haven has kidney failure it wasnt wise to put her through the removal. Fair enough, so i asked about a blood test, they said they partially sedate and again with her being so small she felt it wasnt worth the risk of G.A as she was sure Haven has kidney failure. I left confused and unsure.

A few days later i joined the website i was directed to a few weeks previous (www.tkcc.org.uk) . I posted Haven's symptoms and a very helpful woman asked me a few questions about Haven. I posted her symptoms and was told that she didn't think Haven was in kidney failure. She also said that i should have never been told that, and that her lump cant be felt and told its a tumor- it needs to be stuck with a needle and tested. She asked me more questions about Haven. Long story short but she says she thinks Haven may have hyperthyroidism.

Excessive and frequent urination -- Often difficult to observe, especially in a multi-pig cage.
Enlarged thyroid nodules -- Early development may be impossible to detect. Advanced cases may be as large as a pea and easily felt during palpation by owner or vet.
Excessive energy / very active -- May seem to sleep less, run around more, exhibit more energy in or out of cage.
Increased appetite and thirst for water -- May be difficult to observe in a multi-pig cage.
Weight loss -- Even if eating more than usual, an observed steady weight loss.
Higher temperature and/or heat intolerance -- Guinea pig may seek cool surfaces, avoid warm fleece and be warmer to touch than other pigs.

These are all the things Haven has! Finally something that makes sense i thought.

She has given me loads of useful info on how to test and what to ask my vet! . I have since registered with a known pig savy exotic vet from the vet finder on here.... On the 1st November (first date i can get to him and that he is free). He's about an hours drive from me- and my mum is kindly driving me to see him...

What i wanted to ask was dose anyone here have experience with hyperthyroidism in guinea pigs? I have trailed the web for knowledge and as mentioned the kind lady i spoke to had given me loads of info on it. I just wanted to know dose anyone have first hand knowledge? I am excited and also nervous to see the new vet.

I would also appreciate any positive vibes for Haven, through out she has been strong and is still the amazing piggie she is! :D Wish me luck, i know its over a week away, but cant stop thinking about it!

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for the update.

I think seeing another cavy savy vet is the way to go with this. A second opinion will really be helpful and will hopefully give you some answers. I have no experience so can't advise but as a big 'Haven' adorer would like to send her some healing vibes and a virtual cuddle x

I am sorry I cannot give you any advice but I hope Haven gets the right treatment. In Humans over active thyroids are quite easily treated by medication and I hope this is the same for guinea pigs.

Well that all sounds a lot more positive. Shame on that vet for suggesting something so serious without knowing. Good luck beautiful Haven.

Thanks everyone, from everything i have been told and looked up it can be partly treated with meds if caught early enough- it can be tough and expensive to diagnose..but she is well worth it.. But if she has had it a long time it may have affected her organs already and may not be a happy outcome long term :(- what ever the vet says and even if it cant be treated or isn't this condition - at least i will hopefully get an answer soon.. x

Am glad you received some helpful advice, good luck at your appointment. I don't have any experience with this in my own pigs so can't help in that respect but shout if you need anything else.

Just wanted to say tommorow is the vets for Haven...am excited and nervous about the appointment. Will be so pleased to get the ball rolling for my sweet little girl...Will keep you all updated after the appointment tommorow. Wish us luck!

Hi everyone, Just back from vets with Haven. ....Managed to find it and in true typical me style arrived in the area an hour early haha...so we went and got a coffee and then got to vets early.... The google map instructions got me there ok :P.
Saw my new vet, he was very nice and well informed and agreed without me even saying that he thinks she may have hyperthyroidism... he was very excited as he has never had a case himself as its quite rare in the UK. He took a blood sample from Haven and will call me mid week with her blood result and if it confirms it then he will start her on meds and remove the lump from her neck etc... he was very positive and a really nice and knowledgeable vet.
Feeling much more positive about Haven! :)

Hoorah! Some good news. Am so pleased for you. And shame on your original vet for incorrectly diagnosing a serious problem without testing! I think a strongly worded letter should be sent!

Fingers crossed for Haven and her recovery. Any chance of popping a photo of her on this thread so I can see her?

Thanks, yep i think i may..he says it may be her kidneys still if not but agreed more investigating would be needed either way...but he thinks hyperthyroidism still at the moment.

Here is a picture of Haven taken last night :)

Hope you get the answers needed as soo na soy can. Keeping fingers crossed for the beautiful chilled one! x)

Thanks everyone. I cant wait till bloof results are back...poor Haven...she has now developed a fungal infection. I yesterday bathed her in gorgous guineas shampoo i had in (the fungal one) ...poor love...shes at such a low. Weighed her yesterday and shes now down to 704g :-(. Cant wait to get those blood results and get her sorted :-( x

Thanks everyone :-)Can anyone sugest any fattening foods to bulk her up? I tried her with critical care in addition to her normal food...but she tured her nose up at it :-\

Hi. My vet called this afternoon..
Havens thyroid levels were high range of normal...( she was somthing like 33 and hyperthroidism is somthing like 38plus) but haven also has an infection acording to her bloods. So he wants to treat the infection with antibiotics and re test as he yhinks the infection is masking her throid levels and making them drop (somthing he says can happen) so he is posting me the antibiotics and on Friday he wants me to call him and arrange for Haven to have her blood drawn again and her lump tested. He says then he can get an idea on how to treat her as he says her levels at the moment arnt high enough for him to be happy with starting thyroid meds or operating on the lump till he has a better idea on whats going on with her etc. So yes should have antibiotics in next few days and will go from there.... :-)

Thanks for the update, glad you now have some sort of an action point for Haven. x

Thanks everyone. I am due to take her to have bloods etc done on 18th. So will report back on Haven then :-) . Dont know what antibiotic she is being sent...forgot to ask :-P was just taking all the info in...:-)
