why do people get piggies and then get bored and expect someone else to step in?? Had a call today from a man ,usual bloody story.. kids bored with them.. we don't have time.... blah blah blah malletheadmallethead and who feels guilty about it? ME !! because I said no.
 
i totally agree, it does my head in, they arent toys, they are living creatures.

I just dont think people realise this!

What gets me is how quickly people get bored - the 10 that I took a couple of weeks ago were all no older than 9 months old, but the children wanted a pony instead mallethead mallethead mallethead

And freeads is full of 'children lost interest' pets.

I think the parents need to accept that any pet no matter how small is their responsibility - not the children's - as you can't expect a child to be fully responsible for a pet. Sadly the animals are seen as 'disposable'.

well i know what you mean i advertised my animals used bedding for compost on freecycle as in have no more room in my compost and my friend used to have it for her husbands allotment but they moved and her hubby gave up his allotment well i got an email asking me if i wanted 2 male guinea pigs as children had lost interest because of cause i had mentioned i had 12 guinea pigs in the freecycle add i too had to say no but i felt guilty of course a lot of children get bored of there pets but they need to be educated to the fact they have to look after them or else a parent has to do it surely by a parent saying ok if you cant be bothered to look after them we will dump them off on someone else it is teaching a child that if something becomes too much of a bother you dont need to worry about it just get rid of it sorry to rant grrrr
 
it really disgausts me that people cant be bothered with their pets. i mean, i love my piggies more than anything else in the world and i love them all just the same, i have no favourites, i could never get bored of them. i think my parents never letting me have animals of my own gave me a huge respect for animals and the knowledge that you cant just leave them to it or give them away, pets are forever, not just for christmas, or your birthday, or easter or any other ocassion you wish to add, they're for LIFE!
 
My children have a guinea pig each but me and my husband share a love of the litttle cuties and i knew when i decided to get some it would be down to me to do everything for them. My kids are good though they love helping with feeding and cleaning out. But i completely agree parents that go out and buy pets as presents need there heads testing of course its going to end up with them doing all the work no child is responsible enough to look after an animal.
 
Charlie and Harry who we are trying to rehome at the moment were bought on impulse, by adults I hasten to add, no kids involved. Less than four weeks later I was sheepishly approached to rehome them for her as "he's lost interest and it's not fair on the pigs" and "they were too expensive". Problem solved for them - but wait a moment - a week after giving them to me, they went and bought their third puppy who was £275 from a backyard breeder who hadn't even had their pups routinely jabbed even at 4 months old. Said puppy has kennel cough and lungworm...however the pigs are wonderfully healthy.

Gah!

By the way Cavy, do you remember us talking about the eBay pigs back in June? We were going to adopt them out, but have completely fallen in love with them, and now hubbie is saying he doesn't want to rehome them now... they are little sweeties!

Thanks Sophie - yep they picked this particular pup because, "he looked like he hadn't been looked after properly and was really thin"... how these so - called breeders can make money out of their pups in that condition is beyond me, but as my friend had already previously purchased another two from them before who were in a similar condition without the essential jabs, I wasn't entirely surprised.

Sorry for the breif thread hijack btw, but things like this are just so annoying!
 
Yes, it really is sad. If you can't keep them and afford food for them then just don't get them. But people don't listen and people have to remember they are not just for christmas.

More education is needed in regards to Bunnies and Guinea Pigs. Unfortunately people are just breeding them for the sake of having little ones around and then they grow up and then they realise they have too many and want to get rid of them.

My children have each a guinea pig but I'm the one looking after them. Any animal given to a child is the full responsibility of the adult. I'm teaching my children responsible ownership but they get bored with that quickly, like most children do; and so it's me that tend to the animals needs on a daily basis.

Unfortunately we are getting to that silly season again where animals will be left in the Christmas stockings and then - will be left at the shelters or worse abandoned at the side of the road because they are inconvenient for holidays or they are not longer little and cute. Let's get more education out there! There seems to be a great need for that!
 
i took in a guinea pig this year that had been brought for a three year old they originally went out to buy a hammster and saw the guinea pig and brought her instead because she looked cute she is a beautifull guinea pig who we named sophie she loves human company but not keen on other piggies

what a lovely pig tinso! i bet shes a right character! i dont understand people who love baby piggies, then go off and get bored with them! for me,i love my piggies more and more, getting to know their little personalities is such a joy!

totally agree claire, i love them developing their personalities, and they just get to know you personally more and more too and such a joy to be round!

a gorgeous piggie tinso! i am in love! hehe
