Hi guys, I know I haven't posted in a while. Life has gotten in the way, but all of the piggies are doing well except for one, Patches. He's about 4 & a half yrs old. Every pig I own is special in their own way and he is special because he just lights up the room and he is just so attached to me because when I got him, he was the only one at the pet store for a few weeks and I just had to get him and he is housed with his brother Powder. I call him his brother because they both needed each other and they love each other so much and again he is like stuck to me like glue like I've never had a pig so so so attached he just loves me and I know I am his world. He is always so joyful and sooooooo smart and he builds hay forts and roofs and he can just do so many things I can't even think right now because I'm just upset.

The other day I had noticed that he wasn't himself and then I noticed that he started to squeak a little bit when he was peeing, and there were a little droplets of watery blood very little, but I knew something was wrong obvi so I took him to the vet (I love my Vet. They are so gracious and kind, and I've been going to them for like 10yrs) and they said it could be a number of things, but let's start with an x-ray and worst case scenario if it's a bladder stone and it turned out to be a bladder stone.

This is my first time dealing with a piggy with a bladder stone and boars obviously cannot pass them as easily as some of the sows can, it can be fatal. I've dealt with piggies that had cystitis and some other things, but never this. I can share the x-ray if you would like, but it has not reached his urethra or the exit or anything (yet). It's in his bladder and they said there are 2 options: well he is currently on pain medication and antibiotics along with a probiotic for it. Even though obviously it won't dissolve on its own. They gave me a few weeks supply just in case and they said in like two weeks, we could do a recheck with an x-ray to see where the stone is or if it's gotten bigger. He's been on the meds since Monday evening. Regarding surgery it would be risky with his age and they also do not do the surgery there I would have to go to a surgeon/specialist far away from where I live and I also do NOT have the funds for that and if I did, I still don't think I would do it because I just don't want to put him through that at this time.
Before anyone judges - I know that a lot of the surgeries can be successful however again I don't have the money for it and with anything we don't know the outcome and stones can also return.

The vet had of course mentioned euthanasia is the other option and the only one I have right now. They didn't believe that he needed to be PTS right then and there however they said see how he does with the medication and it's basically like he's on hospice right now and he is still drinking and eating hay, however he's not eating as much as I would prefer so I have been feeding him critical care as needed which sometimes he refuses and he just wants to eat the hay, which is fine and he's pooping normally and I haven't seen any more blood or anything. He does squeak sometimes when he pees and poops and it's gotten a bit better probably because he's on pain meds, but I still don't want him in any pain of course so I know that I will have to make the decision eventually, but this is the very first time I've had to make these decisions because the piggies in the past have either gone quickly or they've passed away right in my arms and I've never had to take them and euthanize them and I'm giving him a lot of playtime and he's getting to see his buddies and of course he's with his brother and I'm spending as much time with him as I possibly can around the clock and I just want to know if anybody else knows how this feels because it's just really hard and you want to make the right decision at the RIGHT time and I am sorry for such a long post, but this has been really difficult for me.

Also, and I have been reading the euthanasia links and stuff and it's helpful but it's still just so sad all around to even think about taking him to the vet and then him not coming home and he is so full of life so I think that makes the decision harder and I understand that it's always a day or a week earlier than a day too late however, like somebody else had said in a post I read it's definitely easier said than done when it's you dealing with it. I am monitoring him around the clock, and if I notice a strong decline as I don't want him suffering, of course I would never allow him to suffer and of course I know there is a risk with the stone moving or getting to his urethra and of course I DO NOT want that to be the case.

If you've gotten this far, thank you so much as I know I was rambling. This is just very difficult for me. 😔 basically if you've ever had to deal with something like this, how did you get through it and basically not beat yourself up over it.

Like of course I don't want to wait until there's an emergency with the stone but if he's also bright and happy right now, I'm just feeling guilty I guess almost like you know what I mean does anybody understand what I'm saying? 😔😔 and I am off today and tomorrow, Friday I work all day, & Saturday and Sunday my vet is closed. So I am monitoring him and spending as much time with him as I can. If there is a decline, obviously I will take him, but I'm also afraid because I don't want to wait until there's a big emergency if that makes sense because I'm very new to the bladder stone situation.

What a cute little guy.
I think more or less everybody on the forum has been where you are, wondering when,. It's a heart-wrenching decision.

Better a day too early than a day too late is what some of the experts on here say. I didn't know of this forum at the time I had guineas, and in retrospect I do wish I'd had some of my guineas pts a day or two earlier, for them.

I don't know that 4.5 years is risky for operations, there are probably quite a few forum piggies of that age and older who have survived a similar operation and gone on to have 6 months or more of happy guinea pig days. Maybe some of those piggie owners will get back to you.

I do understand simply not being able to afford a vet procedure, it's one of various reasons why I no longer have guineas. Maybe someone could help you with the costs, family, friends etc? But you've probably thought of that and ruled it out already. You know your own situation best.

I’m so sorry you are going through this.

I have been in exactly this position in May with my Pebble so I understand completely. Sending you hugs. ❤️

I really cherished the last 10 days I had with Pebble. It gave me time to get used to the idea that he wasn’t going to make it. I asked my husband to make the vet appointment as I couldn’t do that.

My vets were amazing. They took us straight into the room so I wasn’t upset in the waiting room. My vet doesn’t allow owners to be with their piggies so she said I could wait in my car. She brought him out to me when it was over so I could take him home.

He had already had a dental procedure in January and his teeth were going to need ongoing treatment and there was no guarantee bladder stones would not return.

I don’t know how I got through it. You just have to know it’s for the best to save them further suffering.

Here is Pebbles thread if you’d like to have a read.

Not sure if this would work for you but we had a piggy in at the rescue who had a bladder stone, albeit quite a small one. The vet prescribed him (on top of lots of other meds) Hypovase which (taken from google) is used to “treat urethral spasms, ease difficult urination, and help pass small bladder stones or urinary sludge in guinea pigs”
He did indeed pass the stone and recovered fully. Of course this may not work for your piggy depending on the size of the stone but it might be worth discussing in with your vet!
Fingers crossed for you 🤞

Hello I’m so sad to read of your situation
I can really empathise as this was a very similar situation to what happened to my Bobby
He was diagnosed with several bladder stones at the age of 4 yrs 9 months in Oct 2024
He had been treated for infections etc
An op was the only way.
I read up carefully and decided I had to give him a chance
It was a nightmare ….i am still traumatised by it.
He and best pal Geoff were at the Vets early am but he wasn’t operated on til about 14.00 due to emergencies ( if I’d been told I’d have rearranged the op)
He had the op and seemed to recover well but ….the Vet could not get one stone out and the more she tried the more it got pushed into his penis and she thought he might pass it and to see how he got on
I was a bit in shock but brought him home at 18.00
He was listless and didn’t want to eat - she had given me a syringe of strong painkillers which I used.
He just spread out flat on his tummy
I was distraught and knew he was very poorly and this was 19.30
I cuddled him and talked to him and kept him as comfortable as I could.
I put him on a heat pad and Geoff was with him on and off
I checked on him thru the night and he didn’t move.
In the morning he was quiet and motionless
I knew he had to be pts.
I arranged an appt but he died before we left.

That experience left me so upset and traumatised and I still am upset 2 years later
I vowed to never put one of my piggies thru that ever.
I think he reacted badly to the GA as well as the remaining bladder stone
I know some piggies successfully have surgery for bladder stones etc

I wanted to tell you my experience because altho it would have been terrible to put Bobby to sleep I would have …if I’d known how he would suffer.
His best pal Geoff is still with me at 6 yrs 10 months and has had no issue with bladder stones
His pal Freddy ( that came after Bobby) died in his sleep last week .

I wish you love and love to Patches - it is a difficult decision but you have given him his best life ever and that is all a piggy wants or needs.
You can give him a good death if you decide that.

Thank you for the kind replies, everyone. It is very helpful. @weepweeps I will check out Pebble's thread, and I am very sorry for your loss and Pebbles was very lucky to have you.

And I am so sorry @Roselina that is so traumatizing. You did all you could and he knew that he was loved and it's so hard when we don't know the outcome nothing is guaranteed. These situations are so difficult to navigate.

I am leaning more towards making the decision sooner than later because I always want to do right by him as I always have and I think tomorrow may be the day for me to get him PTS. Since I work ALL day Friday and my vet is closed over the weekend and next week I also have a very heavy workload. I'm fortunate that I'm off today AND tomorrow, I want to be here for him and I want him surrounded by happy good times and not suffering. As hard as it will be.

I will have to ask the vets before I make the appt to see if they will allow me to be with him or not during the process if so I know that that will be really hard to handle like seeing it happen and I'm not sure if they allow owners in during that, either way it's going to be hard. And of course, I don't want him to feel alone if I'm not there. :( Ugh either way it'll be hard!

I took him out a little bit ago for some playtime and he ate some hay I did try to give him more critical care at first, but he didn't want it so I will try again later and if he doesn't want it obviously I'm not going to force it. His poop is normal but he is still squeaking a bit when he poops or tries to poop/pee. No blood droplets or anything still since before the vet visit at least. The squeaking isn't as bad it was before he started the meds so I know that they're helping a bit but also I don't want him to have any of that pain because I know he's in some discomfort from the stone. He's a bit more lethargic overall.

Here is his x-ray if anyone's interested. It is not a smooth stone, and there may be some little deposits next to it (kinda hard to see). :(

Thank you so much. Yes it is very hard and every pig is different, they are such amazing creatures and also so fragile. You just never know.

I just called my vet to make the appointment for tomorrow at 5pm it's the latest I could get because I wanted to spend as much time with him as I can today and tomorrow and they said that they have a separate area/entrance with a couch and I can be with him while they do the sedation part and then when they do the 2nd (final) part they will take him for that just so I don't get upset because that's hard and then they will bring him back out for me. I'm going to get his paw prints made, and do a proper burial for him and I will also allow all of the other piggies to say their goodbyes to him, of course.

I will be bringing his brother with him for moral support as well as I know it will be really hard for Powder too. We will all be going through this loss. 😞

I really appreciate everyone's support and help through this because this has not been easy and I love him so very much.

Your Vets sound like caring understanding people
We are always here to support you and we understand
So keep in touch with us 🥰
