So for the past few weeks i have noticed that there has been a bit of confrontation with Darwin and Echo, my two boars. As you may know Echo is blind and i posted a thread about finding little nicks on Darwin and wondering why they were there.
Today there was a lot of rumbles and wagging bottoms from Echo towards Darwin who kept getting too up close to Echos face which was seemingly annoying him. They are now doing a lot of stretching their necks towards each other and teeth chattering is happen from Echo towards Darwin. I fed them a little berry treat and then seen red in Echos mouth a wee while later so i am honestly not sure if it is blood from him nicking Darwin again or if it is the berry treat.
I currently have a loan female guinea pig Thimble who was the wee rescue and i am just wondering would it be better to separate Darwin and Echo and get Thimble and Darwin both neutered and put them together?

I also want to know is neutering ok for a skinny pig and also what age is it for guineas to be neutered as Thimble is only around 7 weeks old.

I hate to do this but i dont want them to get into a real fight as i dont think Echo, who is blind would stand a chance. :(

i would like to just ensure you are aware it is usually only safe to place one neutered male with as many sows as you like !It a tough decision.i neuter all my boars,a because i have a good vet,B} Ive alot of females and cannot risk any accidents.i think a neutered boar with sows is a very stable bond.i had two boars who were up to the wire in dominance behaviours,in a 5 feet cage,i put them in a 6 feet hutch and this has stopped any tensions.i hope you are able to make an informed decision.

What would happen to Echo if you neutered Darwin to pair with Thimble? I imagine a blind piggy relies on companionship more than a sighted piggy... if Echo is afraid that might explain his "bad" behaviour, he cant be left without a friend!

Sorry I probably didn’t write it properly. Darwin would be getting neutered and placed with the female once she is neutered and as for Echo he will be on his own until I find him a suitable partner 🙂 so i would have 1 neutered male with one neutered female in one cage and in another I would have Echo who is intact with another partner. Well once I find him one.

Also can I have 1 neutered male with 1 neutered female or does it have to be more than one female with him?

Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense at all :woot:

So I will be getting him a new little partner, there is a few rescues so I will be having a look round them to find him the perfect piggy companion

Is Thimble spayed? If she is already, you don't have to neuter Darwin. If she isn't, then Darwin has to be neutered and it's perfectly fine for Thimble not to get spayed. Spaying in sows are only necessary if it is needed medically.

Could Echo be neutered too and get a sympathetic lady friend? No need to neuter the ladies if you do the boys, its a simpler op for boys and would increase their future bonding options!

Ah ok, no she isn’t neutered however I will get Darwin neutered so he can be bonded with her.

Yea I will be neutering Echo as well and will be getting him a lady friend. Just hope he copes with it and doesn’t get too stressed with him being blind.
Thanks for the help.

Just one point - you know your guinea pigs so this has probably already informed your decision - but once both boys are neutered and past the six week (?) mark, would it be better to try and bond your blind piggie Echo with Thimble, and if this works then send Darwin out dating? I don't know anything about it myself but was thinking that dating might be a stressful process for a blind guinea pig?

Yea so i was initially going to do that but after looking at the two i think that Darwin would be best suited to Thimble due to their personalities. I think Echo will be fine being introduced to a new piggy as i just need to find one that isn't too forward and one that doesn't go into his face too much and that is what spooks him.

Well the guineas have been split now and are booked in on Wednesday to get neutered. So first thing on Wednesday Darwin and Echo will be going to an exotics vet to get neutered and will hopefully make a quick recovery.
Darwin will be going in with Thimble and Echo has a new lady friend lined up once he is passed the six week mark!

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions as they helped a lot.
