Hi everyone,

I currently feed my boys Timothy hay, and i have noticed whenever i put it in their cage i start sneezing a lot, and develop hives on my hands and arms and wherever the hay has come into contact on my skin.

Is there any other solutions for this?

I’m sorry to hear this

There are a few things you can try:

- taking a daily anti histamine
- using a different type of hay. Meadow hay, for example, may not affect you and is still just as healthy for your piggies
- wearing gloves and a mask
- using an air purifier

It’s probably easier to try a different type of hay and/or use gloves and mask first as if it is only Timothy that is setting you off, you may not need to do anything further

I hope you can find a solution

I will try meadow hay once my Timothy hay has ran out, do you think 2nd cut Timothy hay would make a difference? They’re currently eating 1st cut. I will be using gloves while handling hay and fully covering my skin while giving them hay as my legs have also had hives when in contact with the hay. It is a shame, as they really do enjoy the Timothy hay

Hi, I sympathise as I have hay allergies too, especially to Timothy hay! I do all that Piggies&buns has suggested and it makes a big difference (particularly the air purifier and opening the window to air out room daily/routinely dusting their room too).

I also use a mix of Nature’s Own meadow hay as their main bedding hay then do a small top-up of the Timothy so the piggies still get some but it’s not their main hay!

Good luck
