Hay bale....

Would half a hay bale be ok in a garage....will it go mouldy....? It's a relatively dry garage, just used for storage.

I got sick on paying £3 a bag of hay, so bought a bale for £4 from the local farm. I have filled a huge wheeley bin bag and there is still one bag sat in the garage, as I don't have the room upstairs where my guinea is.

I am thinking of just donating it to my local guinea rescue. Even £4 for the huge bag I have is great value for money, and I would also be helping out rescue piggies.
 
Yes the hay will be fine as long as the floor isnt damp. Hay keeps for ages. I use the meadow hay I buy for my horses and it saves me a fortune!

I read somewhere on a piggy site that they keep the bales in an old duvet cover to let it breath. But I buy the HUGE bags of meadow hay and leave them in my garage in the poly bag and there always fine. Never had prob with them.

I do however have problem with pet shops that stack bags of hay and straw outside in all weathers - rain, sun etc - you can see it sweating and if there is a hole in the bag the whole lot will rot. I actually printed off a circular once and sent to every pet shop in the area asking them not to leave hay and straw outside.
 
Yes, the hay should be ok. Just keep checking it (with your nose is best ::) ) and if it ever smells 'off', then throw it away. But as long as it's kept dry, I think it will be fine.
 
I have 28 bales of hay in my garage right now. I bought 78 as i have 3 ponies too, but all the bales wouldnt' fit in the byre, lol.
I dont' know that keeping it in a plastic bag is good though, mine are just on the floor, maybe a good idea to put a sheet on the floor out of the bag?

Ooooh tell us more about your ponies ! I used to have Welsh Section A's and B's at one time. Sadly can't afford them these days.

And I agree, it's better in the open air than kept inside plastic bags.

It's in a plastic bag, but it has holes in (from me lifting it!) and I have folded the around top over it, so its open and airy. Should be OK. The rate that Rodney is munching it, it will be gone in no time!
 
I keep mine on a wooden pallet, so the air circulates round them. Hope this helps. We have a dun mare 15.1hh a welsh Cob and a 16.2hh TB x Cleveland Bay. ;)
 
mine are lifted off of the floor of the 3rd shed hubby brought me for the pigs, some times if the farmer has kept it a long time it might go musty and get mouldy you must throw that bit away away, a garage or shed is fine considering farmers keep them in barns with all sorts,
 
Well I had the great idea of buying a bale as it is only £2 a bale from my local farm and very fresh and stored well.
Not really thinking I had the clever idea of storing it in the greenhouse over the winter BUT then I thought consendation and damp which I know would be really bad for the hay & my piggies so I ended up splitting the bale into bin bags and putting them in the cupboard under the stairs (my parter hasnt been in there for a while - thank goodness) !
When I moved my guineas upstairs last week and remembered the chest I have them on is actually a linen storage chest with a huge stoage space inside (Ideal for hay!) so out with all of the duvets and pillows and in with my hay ha ha ha!
Needless to say Andy hasnt realised what I have done yet

Bales are so much better value though one bale will last me at least a month where the small packs of hay I am lucky if they last a week and they cost more! >:(
 
Starflick, your ponies are awesome! I adore all the native breeds, but Highlands are one of my favourites ::)
