Hay bale

That seems quite expensive. We pay £6.80- £7.80 depending on the size of the bale. It seems to get a bit cheaper the further north you go. I buy mine from a feed supplier rather than a farm shop though. Either way, it's a lot cheaper than buying hay in small bags from pet shops.

:)

Might be why they expensive then. I'm down south.lol. Hub said hes seen in cheaper, why he couldnt have told me earlier I dont know.lol wouldnt have had to post{:|

I'm south too (West Kent). I know some forum members in the north and scotland pay less than £5 a bale. The price has gone up this year though due to problems with harvesting.

It is much cheaper to buy bales from local feed merchants or farms.

I would love to buy it by the bale but I can't find it in peterborough :( xox

Look for the local equestrian feed merchants or livery yards and call to see if you can buy a bale.

I got one off my friend for £5. It was more than she paid for it, but she gets 150 bales in at a time.

Hay is more expensive this year as the crop wasnt so good last autumn, but there should be some around. Far cheaper to get a full bale if you have the space for it than the expensive little ones from the pet shops.

£4.50 for a big full size bale of lovely hay. Wherever you are, try yellow pages for animal feed suppliers, or livery supplies etc. xx

how big are these bales? We pay £65 quid for a huuuuge bale of hay for my horses :o and lasts about 3 months but depends on time of year really.

A small bale I get for my guinea pigs from a farmer down the round costs about £4.00

Mine is like the bales you see stacked up in barns. Oblong, about 3 - 4 ft long x 2 ft x 2 ft ish and very compressed tied round with twine. x

can you use this hay then? I know years ago (about 20- eekk) a guinea pig my mum had caught mites, and the vet said it was because we'd used our horses hay for it?

I pay £5 for my bales of hay from a local equestrian shop and £6.50 for a bag of w/s the same size.
My brother goes directly to a farm about 10 miles from where we live and he pays £3.50 a bale.
Although I do buy bags of hay for emergencies and they cost £1.50 a decent sized bag from a local family run shop.

There are different types at my animal feed store. The one I buy is baled up and they call it 'Pet Hay' because it is finer, no rubbish in it, and lovely and green. You can get a bad bag of hay from anywhere I suppose. Could be down to storage etc. I don't know anything about horses, but I guess they have different hays too? So the one you had may just have not been suitable? xx

our horses bales are **** about 7 - 8 feet long and 3 feet wide and about 3 - 4 feet high

I pay £3.95 for a bale of whats called Kimberly hay - its meadow grass and clover and my boys go nuts for it and it smells lovely!

Shellza if you read this - petshop half way down Tredworth High Street - and he is reasonable for hay, sawdust and excel nuggets!

Ooh, I usually get the Kimberley hay (in a brown bag with a bunny on the front ?/), but from the Pet shop by the Regal (where we got Archie and Darwin). Price has just gone up though, and my last bag was a bit rubbish, so I'm going to chip in with my housemate next time and get one from a local horse yard for about £3, which is now cheaper than the bags I was getting, for more hay rolleyes

Thats the same one - every bag I get has been brilliant - it's so good my best friend who has lived here for years and didn't even know the shop was there went and got some hay and straw for her bunny and she was saying how brilliant the straw is as well!

To be fair I wont buy anything else from that shop we got the boys in - I swear it was the box I brought Darwin home in (that they gave me) is the reason he hates me!

I don't like going in that shop, but it's the only one within walking distance :)). It is usually really good stuff though, they also sell it in CountryWide, so I might have to look in there instead :)

Well if you want me to get you some from my shop you know I dont mind getting it for you and meeting you in town...or if you catch the number 7 Finlay Road bus in town and get off at Tredworth school its a 4 minute walk down to the shop - he is closed on Wednesday afternoon and he will order stuff for you as well if you ask him.

I needed some choobs as mine had munched their way through theirs and he had them for me within a couple of days :)
