Hi everyone,

Thinking of making a hay box/burrow box for each of my boys. They love burrowing but their hay goes everywhere and I’m finding that we’re getting through lots of it when I sweep and tidy so wondering if a hay box/burrow box will be easier to keep their soft hay all in one place.

I’ve found something like this online when I googled ideas (I wouldn’t put a house in there) but didn’t know if anyone had any recommendations of things they’ve done? I’d like it to be fairly deep, we’ve used litter trays before but find they don’t burrow in them as they’re not deep enough!

I think a few people use storage boxes and cut entrances into them. Otherwise you could maybe make something out of correx. But hay will get everywhere in general I’m afraid.

The one with the little house actually looks quite cool 😂 and I love the way the first one has a tunnel coming out of it at the side, which would probably help keep some of the hay in.

Thanks @Siikibam and @Fantasimo for responding! Yeah I don’t mind the hay going everywhere but wanted it to be more confined for them as they drag it all around the cage and flatten it so thought it would keep the hah a bit more burrow-able :))

My boys have a hutch in my shed. They bedroom area of the hutch is essentially a hay box - it gets stuffed and fluffed! When the hay is fresh (as in the minute it is put in), they burrow through it. Within hours they squash it all down and can’t burrow, so I fluff again but it never seems to fluff the same second time round and from then on all they do is keep it squashed down until I pull it all out and refresh the whole lot (and at two foot by about 18 inches, it takes a lot of hay to refill each time to keep it burrowable!)

Haha they are funny things aren’t they. Yeah my two boys like hiding in it as well so just thought it might give them an extra enrichment activity in their cage and might be a bit easier to swap out old hay and put new in. They might not like it but thought it would be worth a try 🥰
