Hay boxes

We have three baby pigs. I have set up two hay boxes. I’m waiting for a one by two box to arrive next week instead of the rectangular one you see. We top up hay at least 2 times per day some times 3. I have newspaper under the hay.

How often do you dump everything in the box and clean out it out ?

Last night, one of the piggies somehow pulled the newspaper from underneath the hay is that OK? There’s a few little bite marks in it.

It really depends on the absorbent substrate as some are much more absorbent than others. Newspaper can be less forgiving than other types so could need to be thrown out every day.
It really depends on how soggy you are finding the newspaper after x number of days.

My piggies are fully on shavings with hay everywhere in the cage and I spot clean and throw out wet areas (of both shavings and hay) every day (it is usually just a handful or two which is wet which needs to be removed) with a full clean every 5-7 days.

Yes it’s ok.

Hay can go mouldy very quickly so I bin soiled hay on every spot clean, daily.
