@) So many hays to choose from! @)

What's the best type of hay to feed in large quantities, every day?

Obviously they have their additional yummy hays that they have occasionally in addition, but they're all quite ahem... plump rolleyes so I don't want to give them anything too succulent!

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I tend to use meadow hay daily, I get through about 2 and half large bags a week. I know some people get bales of meadow hay from horse feed suppliers think its between £4 and £5 a bale. Unfortunately I cant use it in the winter as my shed is not secure and it would make the hay damp and probably mouldy.

My lot have wilkinsons meadow hay every day (placed in a large cat litter tray) along with two big handfuls of oxbow orchard grass. This gets changed twice daily as they can end up peeing in it :p

Don't worry about your pigs becoming little chubs (although who doesn't love a big pig?) :)) hay won't make them fat, so feel free to offer them a variety.

The hay experts have a great choice, I think you can order some small sample bags to see which hay your pigs prefer.

Meadow hay all the way. Cheap and you can chuck as much as you want at them without it being too pricy! We just picked up a bale today £4.50 for about 10 kilos ish of the stuff. Absolute bargain. It's green, smells lush and the piggies love it!

Definitely beats paying £2.50+ for a kilo if you have somewhere to store it.

I'm going to find a 'treat' hay for them soon to have with the meadow hay, but I'm so chuffed with the quality of the bale from the equine/farm shop that this is what they'll be munching all through the winter. The bale will only last us a couple of weeks, so it's definitely an economical option for them! :)

EDIT: If you're worried about them being a little on the chunky side, consider limiting their pellets a bit more - it'll be the dry food that affects weight more, not the amount or type of hay. :)

Hay wont make them fat, but too many pellets will. I dont think there is much difference in calories to be honest. Just a good quality meadow or timothy hay. I would limit there pellets of muesli mix (whatever you feed).

x.

I feed meadow hay as the main hay and green oat hay occasionally as a treat also I use readi grass daily as piggy loves it

Thanks for the input guys :)

Their pellets are already (very!) limited, it's mainly Jeff who is the little fatty, but the vet who spayed Cameo did make reference to her being fat no less than 5 times in the paragraph of notes about her op rolleyes so she could really do with not putting too much more on!

I think I'll continue what I'm doing then! Regular meadow hay as a majority, with some "special" hay mixed in. They're currently having a super duper treat of readigrass, as I'm desperate to keep Cameo eating on her own. Not sure if she's being fussy or having trouble with her teeth, so we're off to get them looked at tomorrow.

They're currently tucking into some oat hay for the first time, and loving it!

I'm going to order some other kinds now to keep them on hand and mix it up a bit for them!

Thanks again!
