Hi everyone!

I'd like to ask about hay. I'm giving my gps unlimited hay in one area of their home, so there's always something for them to eat or somewhere to hide. These guys are munching away all day along as expected but I guess there is also inedible hay in their cage. So my question is "how do I recognise what is still OK to eat and what what should be turfed out?". Or do you take the more radical approach and just turf out the old hay every day before you throw in the new stuff?

Thanks in advance.

Hi l bed mine on vet bet so there is minamal wee to contamanate the hay
use a small amount of igns hay , but my primeary feed hay is alf alfa kinng Thimathy hay ,
Alf alfa king is the best in my opinion as they enjoy it so much there is no wastage to get mucked up

I leave the stuff that is in hay racks - but change any hay on the ground daily as they are bound to have wee'd on it

I've tried a hay rack but they just don't seem to be interested in it.

Mine have a litter box filled with hay that I change twice a day and also a hay roller that I refill once a day :)

Do you have a photo of your litter box and hay roller. I'd like to see what they look like. Thanks

Umm, I fill it up morning and night so it's a good couple of handfuls each time.

The litter tray is a life saver with 4 piggies cause they do most of there business in there which is why I change it twice a day. And the hay roller just gives them another area of the cage to have hay and they love the challenge of getting the hay out of the roller :D

Thanks. I'll have to make most of my cage equipment, so it's good to see what you're using.

:D I fill up my hay racks every day and remove any hay that has fallen into the litter trays underneath. Sometimes I give my girls paper bags stuffed with hay, which they love. But it's not easy getting hold of paper bags these days!

Do they eat all the hay you put in the rack each day? I'm thinking that maybe I'm wasting hay by giving them more than they can possibly eat. I'm just putting the hay on the floor because they like to forage and hide under the hay.

:D Hi, @Shades!
Some of them eat more hay than others. Crow Feather and Swan often almost empty their hay rack. The fact that they are still quite young and very energetic may be significant. The others never completely empty their racks. Sometimes it helps to completely replace the hay now and then, even if it looks almost untouched. If it has been in the rack for a couple of days, it may not be so "fresh".
