I came home tonight to possibly the worst scare I’ve ever had.
After Beans had jumped into the hay rack, I decided to switch and get some handmade hay bags from Etsy - I thought, no chance a piggy can get in there.

Oh, I was so very wrong. I walked home from work, no sound from the guinea pigs. Run into the room, look at the hay bag, and see the back end of my newest piggie, Waffle - a 8 week old Rex dandling motionless from the back of the bag. I sprint over and I honestly believed she was dead. One of her back legs was hanging out and she wasn’t responding to my touch. Flipped the bag over and let her out gently, and thank goodness she’s alive and okay. Checked her over, she’s absolutely fine. My heart stopped and I think I’ve aged 20 years!

I’m just wondering what you guys please use for your hay feeder, please? A photo of mine is attached that Waffle managed to get into, and I’m shocked but I suppose a teeny baby piggie when spooked can do that! She’s currently having cuddles with me. Anything that you recommend would be brilliant. I’m sure this is a freak accident, but goodness knows how long she was in there as I was at work. What happened if I didn’t walk in the door at that moment, I dread to think! My heart is still all funny

Sorry you had such a scare - these piggies certainly like ot keep us on our toes.

I used similar hay bags int he past and most of my piggies liked to sleep in them.
Are you sure Waffle wasn't just fast asleep?

But these days I use large plastic trays and line them with newspaper and stuff them with hay.
The piggies happily sit in them for ages munching hay and making little nests.

Sorry for your scare. I use the basic black metal hay racks. I know many people don't like them, but I place them up high enough so they can't get it, but can still reach the hay

she could have been asleep, I just worry that she could suffocate in here? Especially as there’s no way out, this usually hangs from the bars so I’m super worried about her getting stuck again, not too sure what to do honestly

I’d just put the hay in a big pile (or two) on the cage floor in this case

i have used hay bags, but my piggies just get inside and doze off, then the hay is all wet !now i just put huge piles on the floor !

I made hay bags (similar to what you have) for my girls but then it led to a bad hay poke for my girl Eclair because she would stuff her head in there so I immediately took those away permanently. Now I try to stay with the regular hanging hay racks to avoid hay poke (as Eclair has had it happen to her multiple times now). If you have soft hay, it's nice to also just line a litter box/tray with it (with some newspaper/pee pads under so it's a little easier to clean up) and they love that! I will also occasionally get a small box and cut holes in it and stuff hay inside which is great enrichment for them!

Sorry to hear about your experience with your hay feeder. I thought I post my piggies' personal hay tray.
Here is my boy Finn's personal hay tray, which he has all to himself. I put some Carefree paper bedding on the bottom and top it with Oxbow hay, which is the only kind of hay he will eat. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add that a small plastic dog bed also makes a fantastic hay tray option if you want to try and contain the hay a little.

I use a cat litter tray which I pile up and they love to dive through and sit in it . And I also have to 2 bathroom caddys from Homebargins attached to the side of the cage one of them is a corner one which fits perfectly and I also use a utensil holder which is great for Timothy hay. The photo doesn't really show them very well, the photo was taken when we only had the two so upgraded the small bowl to the litter tray when the other 3 joined

I need to get a little tray for their hay as their playpen becomes a mess at the end of the day
