I'm new on the forum and I've been researching before adopting some rescue guinea pigs. Everything was going fine untill I remembered my brother has bad hay fever. Especially allergic to grass. I can't ask him to take hayfever meds all year round so does this mean I can't have any guinea pigs? the Guinea pigs would have lived indoors as I don't really have any suibable outdoor space

I Know that Guinea pigs need to eat hay and I also read Timothy Hay is the best hay but is really bad for hay fever sufferers...

Is there any way around this? any hypoallergenic hays that i just don't know of? how have any other hay fever sufferers coped?

I'm gutted cos i was really excited about owning piggies!

There are lots of different types of hay so some may be worse than others for your brothers hayfever.

Timothy hay is not the only option. My guinea pigs have meadow hay.

The only way to be sure how it will affect him is to buy some hay and see how he reacts- if he is young then you must talk this through with your parents first as it may be a risk they do not want him to take. If he's older, then talk to him about it!

I suffer from hayfevery and I have indoor pigs. In fact I sleep like a metre away from the cage.

It's fine, long as I wash my hands after touching then or hay, I am fine. I sometimes get a little rash when I hold them but it doesn't last long... And I don't really care haha.

There's different types of hayfever, I would say long as he doesn't go shoving his head in there he will likely be fine. My bf is also really allergic to animals & he is fine... He doesn't bother with them too much x

I'm highly allergic to grass but hay doesn't seem to affect me (well not at the minute but I'm dosed up) but in the winter occassionaly if its dusty ill sneeze. but i use meadow hay not timothy. I also use dust extracted hay.

Don't worry

Hi, I have had bad hayfever for 25 years, I have had guinea pigs for 7 years now and I too was worried at first, my need to have these little one in my life overtook my worry, but good news Timothy Western Hay did not bother my hayfever at all and honestly I use bucket loads of it.

I hope all goes well and you have many years of fun wth your piggies.

Thank you :)

Thanks everyone, this is all really good news. Very reasuring!

I still might wait untill autumn when he stops taking his hayfever meds an see how his hayfever is when i bring some hay in the house...

I'd rather be sure then have to get rid of my guinea pigs or have a grumpy brother lol!

untill then I'll just plan... and read your piggie stories :)

Well done to you for reading up & doing your research first, far too many people don't x
